Satrix

The fund itself is pretty good, returns aren't bad, and there've been lots of reports that over time, an index fund will outperform an actively managed fund. The fees are nice low, too.

The admin side is useless though. I asked them some questions about my portfolio in December, and they still haven't replied. They're useless at sending out quarterly statements as well.

What she said.

I rather put my my money with an Asset Manager.

Those two things are often linked and unfortunately people who are looking to invest only ever concentrate on the first part... only later do they discover the latter.

In general, yes - but in this case I don't think they are directly. The fund management itself is fine, and you can invest in the fund via a normal broker - you'll still pay low fees on the satrix transactions, as it's an index tracking fund, but obviously you'll pay broker fees as well.

If you invest directly in Satrix, you use their admin people, but don't pay any additional brokers fees. So it's good for smallish investments. They just seem to be struggling to find decent administrators.

Agreed, rather do it through a broker, their admin is useless.

PSG or Standard are some options to start with.

Remeber you can buy these just like a normal share through your broker because the satrix securities are listed securities.

You know what the problem is, and it may not be in this case as this may purely be poor administration, but in most companies now unless you are an accredited advisor the FAIS act does not allow you to give advice on any financial product. So unless you have dealt with an accredited broker the call centres can just process requests on your behalf but not provide any information which may constitute advice.

Satrix is a good option if the amount of $$$ you want to invest is too small to diversify into multiple companies.

If you're talking big $$$, then why not build a portfolio yourself & learn something from it along the way.
