Say goodbye to the VHS

and the movie rentals came with a notice: "Be Kind Rewind"

use to see this on labelling for DVDs as a rental in Cpt just reprinted the same covers for their dvd boxes.. use to rolf when i saw it.

well I still have about 50 VHS tapes in a box at home - don't have a VHS machine :( anymore - would like to preserve them onto DVD at some point.

but this got me thinking - which I occasionally do - because I love music video's and prior to VHS the only time one could see a "music video (film)" was at the drive in's - if you were lucky.

My brother-in-law had a music shop in the early 70's and got probably the first video camera & VHS machine in Cape Town. it was a huge suit case size top loader similar to one in the pic above! He was permitted to video tape my sisters cesarean section of their first born son. so that puts it around February 1974.

so the first music video I ever saw on VHS was this song by "cheech & chong - basketball jones" - it was part of a compilation road show tape.
I think Hot Chocolate's - Emma was also on it.

So what was your first VHS tape recollection / encounter?

Mine was Betamax. We rented the machine from the shop and the movie was The Fables Of The Green Forest if I remember correctly. When we bought one it came with a tape of James Bond in a small "fold-up" plane. We still have a lot of stuff without any machines available any more.

Ha! I still remember my dad going to get one of those old style film projectors. The movie came in large briefcase-style box with about 3 large reels in it. Put sheets across our curtains and then we watched it. Still remember the film breaking and him splicing it back together with sticky tape. I was born in 1970 btw :)

I remember trying to record something off the TV in the early 80s, my dad just got a VCR. I was so upset when we got back from the park and the thing recorded the wrong channel, instead of what ever cartoon it was, it was 50/50

It seems I have some thing, every one with VHS tapes in this thread wants.Dual DVD/VHS recorder last LG unit to go into production, Got it for xmas about 5 years back apparently there was a waiting list as long as my arm for one of these units, apparently you can plug in your cam recorder and directly record to DVD. :p

I seem to recall my father had a national VCR came with a bar code reading pen. You could just scan the bar code next to the programme listed in the tv guide mag.
I remember. We had one of those.
