There is a scam running currently and I would like to warn everyone.
This was attempted on my wife this past week.
You receive a call from someone with a number starting with (+15...) claiming to be from Microsoft asking you why you have not updated your computer even though they have sent you updates. And they are very persistent. They called her more than 4 times.
The person might have your name (likely gotten from the online telephone directory. They called on our landline) and they will explain that your PC is sending notifications to them that certain drivers/system files are being stopped because of a problem.
To convince you, they will give you a "customer ID" that is supposedly for your computer: To convince you they might instruct you to open command prompt on your PC and run this command "ASSOC"

The result of this command right at the end will look something like this:
ZFSendToTarget=CLSID\{888DCA60-FC0A-11CF-8F0F-00C04FD7D062}

They will then quote this number in {} brackets to you as your customer ID. Please note, this number is the same on all windows computers regardless of version of operating system you use.

Further to that they may ask for details or offer to send you a link. I am not sure what will happen after that but likely they will infect your computer with spyware or malware and either demand a ransom or steal personal information or sell you software/charge for the support.

My wife handed the phone to me and I then exposed this guy for the fraud that he is and he then just cut the phone on me.

Please be warned.

You would think they have a database of who they have called already ... still we get one of these calls twice a month ...

they never call me

would love to tell somebody to piss off over the phone :D

They called my father-in-law telling him he had a virus.
He'd put is laptop into standby and didn't know how to wake it up so he thought it was a valid call.
Luckily he called me to ask if it was legit.

You're about the 77th person to tell us.
Hey - at least they joined up and made what they thought was a helpful first post. Better than another relationship advice thread.

They called my dad the other day who has never owned a computer in his life.

The poor guy was in a state :(

surprising that people are not aware common scams like this which is why these people are still in business
