Typically they:
Install crrypto software, and ransom your data
con credit card details
install keyloggers

or even a combination thereof.

My most recent encounter...
client finally wizened up when the "tech person" whined about his(client's) AV(eset smart security) was preventing him ("tech person") from doing his job.
Then he called me. FINALLY.
my instructions
shut down, or unplug, whatever is successful at turning off the PC. Then bring it to me.

Worringly they have my full name and address...

Asked me to use run to open up their site and download whatever, when I told them my PC didn't have internet they said they would switch to their phone guy who then said my "computer license" had expired and I needed to pay for a new one to continue using my computer
