Scanner and Printer Server

Hi Guys i hope this is in the right place if not please move it.

I currently use CUPS on my Ubuntu Linux 8.10 to control one of my printers now i want to add a scanner to this server so that i can scan over the network

is there any way i can do this?

Is this a stand alone scanner, i.e. USB based? If so, I'm not sure you can have scanning over a network. I know that you can't share a scanner like that in Windows. The only network scanner I've seen that could be controlled by a pc was part of an HP OfficeJet unit.

I think the logic behind it is that to operate a scanner, you need to be at the device to feed documents, so they never took into account network scanning.

It is USB based But how do i do it over the network?
