My 8 year old scanner is acting up like an old man with Parkinsons, so I need to put it in a retirement home and find me a new one.

The one I currently have is the Sahara Bear Paw 1200 and I'll be looking at something similar to replace it with.
Any recommendations?

I have no idea what they go for nowadays, but a cheapy like the Bearpaw would suffice. Around R500-00 I would guess?

Thanks, Madman. Any other out there?
I would prefer a few to choose from since it also has to be Linux compatible.

Also what I forgot to ask, is there a difference in scanners since a few years back? Or are they just as slow?

The reason being that I can get the same scanner second hand for next to nothing, but if there have been some real world improvements in scanners it would be worth my money and while to invest in a newer model.

Define slow? And years back? It depends on the price of the scanner; some scanners can do a 100+ pages per minute. An entry level sub R1k scanner today, will however, be faster than the equivalent model from 8 years ago. What interface does your scanner have, USB one or two? The difference in speed between the two is huge, and will influence the scanning speed....

Like I said in the OP, 8 years back, and slow as in one page per minute. I have totally lost touch with scanners and have no idea of they are capable of, but 100 pages a minute is astounding! Heck, if I can get a cheapy that can handle 10 pages per minute I would be very satisfied indeed.

The scanner is still USB 1.0, those days there were no USB 2.0, so I guess that answers my question.

I was going to say that the Lide 100 isn't very fast, but if you're happy with 1 ppm I'm sure it will do.
Have you considered a small multifunction printer, you could probably get one for around R500. The scanner should be better than your old one, but obviously the whole thing will be bigger/bulkier.

LOL. I remember my first scanner was LPT - I swapped it for a P166MMX because it was too slow to be of any use :) ANY Scanner that you buy today will be MUCH faster!!

+1 My HP 6313 All-in-one is great, even in Linux.
