can someone tell me what would be a good scanner i dont want one of these 3in1 things just a scanner

i saw a nice genius one 1200 dpi

What do you have in mind for it?

well i want to make catalogues, so i will need to scan alot of books from my suppliers

i spoke to someone who said the hp 2400 should do the job

I'm glad you raised this question. I'm looking for one too.

The reviews liked the Epson ones, but they are not common here. Also the Canon Lide was given a good writeup (Watch for OLD outdated models!!)
  1. The traditional scanners have a CCD in them (like in cameras), but others have a cheaper CIS (Contact Image Sensor) for lower power consumption.
  2. Optical resolution rather than interpolation. The more dots the better. Minimum 1200dpi recommended.
  3. Does it use a USB port instead of the mains?
  4. Color depth = How much information captured in each individual pixel when scanning. Minimum 24bit recommended.
  5. OCR Scanning software bundled. Omnipage or Abbyy Finereader?
  6. Extras: Ability to scan photo negatives using an adaptor.
  7. Photo fixing software bundled? Photoshop Elements 4?
  8. ...does it take up a lot of space or can it be placed on its side. Does the lid flex to handle big books/files?

Canon. We have a Lide60, but the other models are good too.

Great..:). I want to OCR digitise a technical manual with 200+ pages of photos, diagrams and text. Do you think a Lide70 would handle it well? (I have Omnipage and can get ABBYY)
Would I be better off with the 400F/500F models?

I have a epson 1670 with the adapter for slides and negs and its an excellent product. I had a Genius to do the same job with but it did not perform as well as the Epson does. I suspect that this model I have is no longer available and there may be a newer one around, but I am very impressed with it overall. Try get a demo of an Epson from somebody (although I found that it was almost impossible to get anybody to demo a scanner when I bought this one)

I have been using a Canon LiDE 50, and it works very well. It is a bit slow(in terms of the time it takes to scan something in), and doesnt have a sheet feeder, but in terms of quality, it is perfect, and quite cheap as well.

Use it for OCR quite often, and with ABBYY it works perfectly...

Bought a Canon Lide 70 just before the festive season.
As happy as can be.

The Omnipage SE 4 bundled with it is rubbish.

I use to use Omnipage 8 and now got Omnipage 15 Pro. Still have to play with it but first impressions have me jumping with joy. With good reason. With my former Genius scanner I made 60,000 OCR pages in two years. The project continues.

Have a look at the canon 4400F
I took your advice and bought the 4400F. Incredible Connection were messing about with their pricing so I went to Computer Mania and they gave me a good deal.

It works well. I used Omnipage Pro 15 for a while but wasn't impressed. NOW I am trying Adobe Acrobat 8 and WOW!! what an improvement on OCR. :p
