A suspected serial rapist has confessed to kidnapping and murdering Florida pupil Louise De Waal, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

"He handed himself in at the Margate police station [in KwaZulu-Natal], this morning," acting Gauteng police commissioner Maj-Gen Nobesuthu Masiya told reporters in Johannesburg.

She said Warrant Officer Peet du Toit, who headed up the investigation into De Waal's kidnapping, managed to get hold of the man through his brother, and convinced him to hand himself in.

The man was allegedly linked to nine cases of rape and one of murder, she said.

The crimes were attributed to a man nicknamed the "Sunday rapist".

According to Beeld newspaper, the police had been investigating the man in the Roodepoort area after finding De Waal's schoolbag in a car that matched the description her friend gave to police.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lt-Col Tshisikhawe Ndou earlier said a grey Toyota Hilux bakkie, matching the description of the car used to abduct the teenager on Wednesday morning, had been found abandoned at a house in Florida, Roodepoort.

Beeld reported that the man had been under investigation in the past for harassing schoolgirls in the Roodepoort area.

Police were still waiting for DNA results to confirm that a burnt body, found on a farm in Magaliesburg on Wednesday afternoon, was De Waal's. Her family was however widely quoted in the media on Thursday as saying the 17-year-old Hoërskool Die Burger pupil's body had been identified by a belly ring and earrings.

On Wednesday morning, a bakkie pulled up alongside two girls walking on the corner of Rina and Herman streets in White Ridge around 7am.

"A man got out and ordered the teenager into the vehicle. When the girl refused, he pointed a firearm at her until she complied," Ndou said.

The other girl, Natasha Gordon, ran away and the bakkie sped off with her friend.

We need Bakkes Botha to forcibly insert a pineapple where the sun dont shine on this guy.

Masiya said the man, in his 30s, had a previous conviction for sexual assault.

"He was arrested in 2007, convicted and sentenced to three years in prison. The sentence was suspended for three years. He spent time doing community service."

wow ....community service for a serial rapist

what is happening to this country

That was very quick.

That was very quick for him to get down to Margate and be arrested there.
I wonder what time he did the deed yesterday?
And why did he decide to head for the coast?
And how did he get there if he abandoned his bakkie?

The farmer saw the smoke at 11am yesterday. Fire must have been burning for I guess an hour at most. He handed himself in this morning. Plenty of time to drive down. Probably had another car.

I'm just trying to follow the logic is all.

I know you can't be saying the death penalty is a deterrent. I mean... there is no evidence of that so that would just be conjecture at best.

So when convicted the first time, instead of giving him a suspended sentence with community service, are you saying a death sentence would not have prevented this killing?
Are you a WUM?

I don't know what a WUM is.

As to a suspended sentence that was for a previous case of sexual assault, unless you know the particulars of that case the suspended sentence may have been a reasonable sentence. This is murder. I don't know of a country that carries a death penalty for sexual assault. Are you honestly suggesting sexual assault be made a capital crime? :wtf:

Perhaps, it would have spared us you... TROLL of note.
Instead of commenting on actual article, you instead choose to dissect my response...

How is talking about penalties for his past crimes (which are discussed in the article) not commenting on the article?

I don't think the man should be put to death. I definitely don't think we should be shoving pineapples or grenades up his ass either. That makes society no better than this man. The only way society can be seen to be fit to pass judgement over others is if we as a group stand up and demonstrate that we will not lower ourselves to that level. That we will not kill or torture someone.

Seriously though do you think sexual assault should be made a capital crime?

Not that I wish this on anyone, but would love to see your reaction if this was your daughter /sister/ mother....
Demonstrate peacefully all you like... I say kill them.

A close friend was murdered. In a pretty brutal and painful fashion. I did not wish death on the man that did it.

Next time make sure you know what a person has experienced before you say something. After all we do live in South Africa, many of us have experienced violent crimes.

I hope your foot tastes great.
