Schools closed for 2010 World cup.

As long as they make it up during the rest of the year I'm fine with that.

Then it makes perfect sense.

They altered the Gauteng school term dates during the World Summit on Sustainable Development as well..

how does this deviate from the norm of mega events? why is london hosting the olympic games during its summer period..why did all 2012 bidding cities plan their hosting periods to coincide with school holidays periods..traffic traffic traffic

we need to distinguish whats the norm and what is actually just the standard for mega events, we often think in some way we are special to FIFA, in a way that they change rules to make life harder for RSA to host

e.g. no unaccredited/non FIFA advertizing within 1km of the stadium...nothing new, applies to all world cups, we arent special, same with generators for stadia etc. all of these terms were in the host city and contract we signed.

Because they're the summer Olympics? :D ;)

So far I've seen pretty much unanimous support for the plan in the thread, right?

any mega event benefits from fewer people on the road.
even madrid with its insanely top notch transport system is bidding to host the games in 2016 during school holiday periods.

in RSA we dont have that benefit of a world class transport system. the difference on the roads during school holidays is def visible in cape town.

I can vouch for this. It is amazing without those cars on the road now. Driving to varsity in the morn is a breeze!

2010 and schools closing

Word has it that schools will be closed for extended periods during 2010... anyone else heard this or have a linky to any info?

I love this bit...
The National Education Department is proposing a five-week long school break during the 2010 Soccer World Cup to avoid pupil and teacher absenteeism and a chaotic transport system.

Why don't we legalise theft to reduce crime while were at it.

why dont we reduce the holiday periods in december or april so that the number of school days remains the same.

alternatively..how about investing real funds into transport instead of the pathetic allocations host cities get.

This I understand and from the sounds of it (from reading the article) that is what they have planed

How is this an alternative to school holidays?

Yip.

Bring back trams to popular centers and ban cars. e.g. cars go to the outlying areas of Sandton, from there you catch a tram / shuttle to wherever you want to go in Sandton. Certain lanes for delivery / loading vehicles only. Have a monthly or annual public transport pass.

That would be great, wouldn't it.

Yeh... until the taxi mafia decide they don't like it. I think you'd see a bloodbath, or malicious damage to property. Then again... if it's done in consultation with... i.e. they still make their fare on the highways to and from South/North... but then they prolly think it's not for anyone else to decide anything on public transport.

One wonders what kind of fighting we will see for transporting foreigners when they arrive in SA... I'm sure plenty naiive foreigners will want to try the Zola Budd thing...
