Hmmm, sounds like fabulous training for the world of work...
Boss: 'Where are you going?'
New Empl: 'But I've done some investigation, I'm off now'.
Boss: 'You're fired'.
I'm sure there is more to this school system than the story describes. Perhaps students will be so motivated to learn because the information is so interesting and vital to their life. Perhaps its a good thing, if you take learning seriously you can have a better job, if you decide not to learn its your own fault and you must live with the consequences. No more moaning that the education system failed you...

It's potentially great actually. But people really need to keep in mind that at the moment Africa != Rest of World.
This might work in an environment where kids are really keen to learn and work but here in SA it's hard enough convincing kids to do the little work Teachers are allowed to give them.

It all sounds alright, I just can't bring myself to trust M$
Why not invest in the XO laptop? Get a million into the hands of kids in this country and watch those kids "informally" educate the hell out of themselves.

The grand ideas some people come up with.
This whole idea presupposes that children has already the sense of responsibility and ethics that they can be left to their own devices to choose what is best for them.
While you may think that it can be true for the really intelligent and intellectually stimulated kids who has been raised in a good home and who are of the right age, you are strectching your presuppostion to its breaking point.
The majority of kids come from mediocre homes and I would fear for our future if we left kids to make their own decisions.
Only when kids are 16-18 do I feel that they have the sense of responsibility to take command of their own lives.

I really like the idea that they have put forward, however my belief is that there has to be a fair degree of structure built it.
I know from when I was back at school that if you gave me that sort of freedom, I certainly would have spent most of it doing my own thing, that would most likely not have involved learning skills that could be put to use in the work place.
At the end of the day, you are better preparing children to enter the world of work, but do you actually give them a grounding in a variety of subjects? Also, how often is it that a child/teenager actually knows by that stage what they really want to do for the rest of their life.

They should stop learning the kids how to strike and start learning then things they can use to get work.. Not stand around singing and shouting crap at people they don't know and who don't give 2 shots.
The equation is easy, "Show up for class + Pay attention + Study hard = Good and easy to get paying job!" Ive done it and im working full time, and i love my job!
