Scientist calls for robot ethics

We need robots to looks after our kids now.

He said short-term exposure “can provide an enjoyable and entertaining experience that creates interest and curiosity."

So does a car toy. A child-care robot must be one of the crepiest things I've ever come across.

Ill take one that cleans everything, including the dishes and laundry so that I get to spend more time with kids :D

Isaac Asimov’s “Three Laws of Robotics”

Law # 1:
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

Law # 2:
A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

Law # 3:
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or the Second Law.

Looks like they will be an increase in unemployment by the year 2010.

These are nice laws but they require excellent fuzzy logic or fuzzy AI. An AI which works in absolutes won't be able to function and will get bogged down.
Eg. How will a robot know how much action is necessary before it's no longer inaction or whether a particular action its ordered to perform will lead to harm. Too many possibilites. Lol :). Looks good on paper though.

These laws look a bit like science fiction to me becuase I dont think AI is anywhere close to that level yet

Haha. i'll second to that! :) Thats a brilliant idea! It would make life much easier! and less stressful! And would most probably make family life better! Parents would not neglect their children.

I tend to agree with the Prof. These rules and guidelines should be set up now while Robotics is still in its infancy rather than trying to set it up after everything has gone pear shaped. It would seem some big names are also calling for it. In his latest newsletter Bruce Schneier even called for the exact same thing.

For those who dont know, Bruce Schneier is one of the leading cryptologists in the world.

One day when I give birth to robot, I'll get a robot nanny to look after my baby:rolleyes: Until then I have nothing to worry about, except stupidity:D

You missed law # 0: Didn't you notice the huge problems the first law caused in the greater scheme.
