A team of scientists from the Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen have managed to transmit a record 1.84 petabits (1,840 terabits) of data per second using a single computer chip, New Scientist reports.

The amount of data transferred is equal to downloading 230 million photographs in a second and higher than the rate of traffic that travels through the entire Internet's backbone every second.

I assume the point of this is to make equipment cheaper by making them denser in terms of how much data they can handle. Less equipment needed to do the same job.
 
So throughout goes exponential. But how do you reduce latency? Speed of light is too slow, can we get latency down by 10x or more? Will definitely need it to communicate (play Doom multiplayer) beyond earth ...

“You could say the average Internet traffic in the world is about a petabit per second. What we transmit is two times that,” said study lead Asbjørn Arvad Jørgensen.
Scientifically that is not correct. 1.84 is not two times.
I am sceptical.
