The U.S. District Court's freeze on federally funded embryonic stem cell research has sparked a firestorm of controversy as scientists in the field cope with the devastating blow this ruling deals to their work.

"If the ruling cannot be lifted soon, this will do irreparable harm to the field," says Sam Morrison, director of the Center for Stem Cell Biology at the University of Michigan.

Judge Royce Lamberth ruled this Monday in favor of a case brought by Christian medical groups and adult stem cell researchers, approving a temporary injunction of federally funded research involving embryonic stem cells on the grounds that it violates the 1995 Dickey Wicker amendment.

With religious people theres no such thing as freedom from religion just freedom of religion. Way to go Christians.... your religious hangups are slowing our scientific and health research down.

Why would they care about helping and healing someone who is alive now when theyve got an afterlife to send all their victims to.

Headlines like this upset me. Bah! Fking Neanderthals.

I have a sneaky suspicion that they'll be first in line to reap the benefits when someone from a more forward-thinking continent finally cracks it.

I thought that new advances in stem cell research meant that they did not need embryos anymore? So why are they still trying to go down that controversial route?

Yip, the same as those like Palin opposed to national health care as nobody can get a free ride heaven forbid but she herself skipped the border to Canada to go get free medical care.

"We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost..."
- Barack Obama in his inaugural speech.

...WTF happened dude?

erm, generalize much? you think because a "christian medical group" blocks this, so all us Christians agree with them???

How bout you act like a fscking grown up.

would it have been hard to say:

"this is what this group has done, is this the viewpoint of all Christians out there and why"

some might have replied in orderly fashion " no, i don't agree with this, since God has given us the brainpower to research these things, we should give it a chance and see how it goes, perhaps they should just set out guidelines of what is appropriate and what not"

and also, what happened to the 3 sides of a story? (mine, yours, the truth?), you read one story and decided...

Having fun generalising? Quite a few Christians are all for stem cell research. Just a pity some of the decision-makers in the U.S. are so backward.

Yes, Mike, you're 100% correct. So hypocritical they make me want to

EDIT: I see Bizkit87 beat me to it.

Uhm... yea: GO SORT YOUR FSCKING BRETHREN OUT DUDE!

Then we can talk like 'fscking grown ups'.

The fact that this passed means that the majority of xtians support it. This makes his generalisation quite logical (look it up) and well in order. Your silence and the silence of other xtians who do not share this view supports it regardless.

Want to be treated fairly and addressed with respect? Step up and do what's right.

BTW: The U.S. District Court <> one isolated church group. this passed through legislature... did you read the article?

Actually... I think you will find that this passed because the Majority of Americans supported it.

Whether or not their demographic make up shows them to be predominantly Christian might be related... but is nevertheless incidental to the outcome.

The fact is... this is what the American Public want.

What are YOU gonna do about it... besides whine like a baby on a public message board?

 Um, sorry... were you trying to say something comprehensible there?

Sorry... meant: potshots... the context does induce understanding though so I am a little :erm: that you couldn't grok that.

Fair point... I am not certain of the numbers though so unless you are this math is sketchy.

What are YOU gonna do about it... besides whine like a baby on a public message board?

Wow! Classy.

If millions or even billions of lives could have been saved, then this, intrinsically speaking, is a matter of murder.

Not a wise move in a population with the most ambitious generation just turning 60.

America has got a serious economic health crisis looming, the US is also the most well skilled nation in this field and they've got China aging and cash rich as well, this is a very bad move portfolio wise.

Ron Stoddart, executive director of Nightlight Christian Adoptions, an agency that was one of the original plaintiffs in the lawsuit, says the suit was not intended to put a stop to all government funded embryonic stem cell studies, only to halt the federal endorsement of research that encourages future and continued destruction of human embryos for scientific purposes.

"The Obama administration tried to say that if private funding was used to create and destroy embryos, federal funding could be used for the research, but it's all part of the same process," he says.

Those in the field, however, fear that a broad interpretation of the ruling could do away with federal funding of any and all embryonic stem research and are counting on a quick appeal.

So the people who are upset by this ban are upset because it could be interpreted broadly.

Do you have actual proof of this or are you just scared that this will be the case? Because as the dictum goes "first do no harm" it makes more sense to err on the side of caution. Non-embryo harvested stell cell research is possible.
