Screamer WiMax

yea happens to me as well. thought it might have been just my router. but was happening when i connected directly to the IDU

At least it's not just me :)

I've sent the screenshots to Howzit, maybe he can get somebody to check it out for us.

Damn irritating when playing dota, get disconnected and then VP'd

It is a known problem - I have had the same issues and I am convinced it is linked to the amount of connections (or demand on the network/station) as the problem is worse during the day.

I need to follow-up with Screamer as they were looking to make some changes to address the problem but I haven't heard from them as yet.

Starting to get very irritating I must say. I have logged multiple calls for this exact problem and don't seem to get any meaningful feedback from the support guys.

I was playing dota last night with a ping running to google and to the fourways base station, I got the same problem with a disconnection. My pings showed that my connection to the base stations was 100% yet I still had the 7-8 lost packets to google. Looks to me like the problem is further upstream and not on the WiMax/WiFi network.

@ SliverZA

Had the same problem since they installed it. They have now replaced everything and it's still the same. Sad to say, but I have now cancelled my Wimax and will be going back to 3G for now.

I wanted this just to play online, but with all the disconnects and VPs on war3(like you mentioned), it's just not worth it.

Hope yours get sorted though. :(

I was loosing approx 1% of packets but need to check if this is still the case. My packet loss is to the base station.

I am able to play online games but have to accept 1-2 dc's in an evening as well as the occassional latency spike when a couple of packets get lost.

Not ideal but then I don't have many options atm. Telkom is in the process of installing new lines in my area and I might consider switching or running a dual system.

A question to all of you using Screamer
Has anyone recently gotten someone from Screamer to come do a signal strength check before committing to a contract with them??? I am kind of worried as I can't get Telkom 3G coverage from my apartment which is on the first storey of the building :D
Also, can you clear up for me if I need to get something from a ISP like Axxess on top of the WiMAX connection to have internet access???

Check the screamer coverage maps. Assuming their coverage maps are correct, and there are no major physical obstructions in your way, it is just a matter of how high they install the antenna.

You can't use a third party ISP, you'll be locked in with Screamer as bandwith provider. Pity, as their bandwith is not the cheapest around. Hopefully the benefits of Wimax to you will make up for it.

Not happy to hear this I must say but thanks for letting me know. I'll give them a couple of weeks to sort it out and if they don't fix it I'll be looking elsewhere. I personally don't think it is an equipment problem, deffinately appears to be further upstream.

I only have a connection at home for gaming, if I am going to have continuous disconnections it is no use to me at all.

I have gone from level 23 in War3 down to lvl 16 due to these disconnects and VP's, will switch to my 3G card for dota for the meantime.

Well, we check and I get packet loss even to their dns server... They say I have the best signal you can get...

Luckily I am still on level 23, cause when I get disconnected, I leave bnet as it seems they can't vp you if you aren't online. ATM I'm just not playing, which Sucks.

Try dc'ing in the middle of a Warcraft arena match ... you get thrown straight out my the server leaving my poor healer to fend for himself :/ I don't have an alternative atm.

Hi Gamers

Sorry I have not been able to respond earlier to your occasional disconnects but this problem has had us scratching our heads until, with the help of some feedback we had from some of our gamers, we identified the 2 sites that were presenting an intermittent problem. We are changing them this week and all should be back to normal by next Monday.

Sorry about the ignomony you have had to suffer at the hands of your opponents and the destruction of your respective gaming reputations in the interim.

Thanks for your help with this one

Thanks for the update howzit, I hope this solves the problem.

5 VP's in dota and I have gone from lvl 23 down to 0 :( Not the end of the world but can't wait to get some stable gaming in.

Thanks.

I have provided most of my findings to your technical team but for completeness I will summarise here:
(1) Approx. 1% packet loss to my closest station in Brysanston. This is measured at the first IP address in the route (as provided by your team).
(2) Latency/"lag" spikes between the base station and your DNS server (normal latency is 50ms but can spike to 1500ms or even higher on occassion).

Issue (1) is by far the most frustrating as it is this issue that results in disconnects. Issue (2) causes lag in the game but is less apparent late in the evenings, which points to congestion within your network.

Hi

We are aware of this and have identified the faulty daughter board in the BS that is responsible for these glitches. It should be replaced today or tomorrow.

I must just say I was really impressed with the 48 hour installation time from Screamer, and the guys that came to install were really cool and tried everything they could to get signal.

Sadly even though I have a double-storey with access to my roof at my place in Broadacres, just across the way from Dainfern, I could neither get signal from the Kyalami BS or from the Dainfern Wi-Fi.

Hope you guys get a tower closer by some time soon, I'll sign-up.

Hi Undefined

I am sorry that we were not able to connect you but our field engineers have very strict signal levels that they have to achieve before they connect a client to our network.
We have had quite a few clients in the broadacres area we have had to disapoint so I will send this to our tech Dir and hpefully he will get a tower erected in this area.

Howzit Howzit

That would be awesome if it happened, think there might be a good few potential customers, a lot of new complexes and no phone lines in the area because of cable theft. It's a bit of an Internet Black Hole at the moment.

I'd even put up a Screamer WiMax notice for the complex who are all probably in the same situation! :D
