Screamer WiMax

MTNBusiness (Verizon) is another option. We use it for playing WoW through iBurst and it has been working great for last 2 months :) Perfect latency and no disconnects.

I have heard so many varying reports about iBurst stability and it seems to come down to how close you are to the tower.

Might be an option worth trying if I can't get my connection sorted. Mind pm'ing with your setup/config/etc?

Been poking my head into the Neotel thread - seems like they are having their fair share of problems.

As my investigations have shown the problems aren't within Screamer's network (at least not for me) but with Neotel.

Are we truly left with Telkom/Saix as the only real option for international backhaul?

No not really, but what most people don't think about is Telkom has decades of experience in this. The more I notice about how they do things and how long it takes them for certain things, the more it makes sense *why*

For example, why didn't they just give us 8mbps ADSL lines back in 2002 when they released when technicians confirmed it was 8mbps uncapped... the technology was available, but why release 512k? Then slowly 1mb and eventually 4mb?

Simple. Network capacity. ADSL2+ rollout and, well, ask any company (Sentech?) it takes a bit of practice to get the balance right. Not just that, the pricing too. Imagine what the price of ADSL would have been if they started out with 8mbps uncapped ADSL lines.

Plus the fact that most leased line services would switch to the technology as well meant that they had to provision a crap load of bandwidth.... from where? Telkom might be a shareholder in SAT3 but they don't own the entire cable, they need to purchase whatever they require.... and now with SAT3 being upgraded as well I think there might be good things on the horizon. Even though the horizon stays the horizon the closer you get to it :D

Anyway, Telkom's wireless (Wimax) solution is perfect. As I can choose from Verizon/IS or SAIX. No upstream provider problems. If my SEACOM based bandwidth provider is having problems I just pop in my SAIX account details and off I go... easy

Screamer seems a lot better tonight - not perfect but a lot better - and been running the ping for a long time:

Ping statistics for 209.85.227.106:
Packets: Sent = 11841, Received = 11612, Lost = 229 (1% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 218ms, Maximum = 997ms, Average = 256ms

Might have to consider Telkom WiMax but would hate to give up on Screamer when it seems so close to coming right. Would be great to have the option of switching route though.

The issue I have had in the past with all wireless providers is that they do sometimes fall into a little ditch where their signups become a lot and the bandwidth stays the same (or there's some kind of problem with their bandwidth and your connection crawls or dies)

Which to me is normal for a wireless provider. However, it won't ever run seamlessly from the point where it "came right" again. I've experienced this with Sentech, iBurst and 3G. If you love an erratic connection and them blaming upstream providers, go for it. Not my cup of tea.

At least with Telkom Wimax you can switch between ISP's like I've mentioned, and knowing SAIX, they have the SAFE cable they use as backup too, so it's not always slow and bounces right back up within a few hours (maybe a day or so depending on what was wrong)

At least the internet during that time is still usable..

Noticed in "MyBroadband's News" that Neotel are offering WiMax - is it any good?

I would have my doubts considering what friends have told me about their Neotel experience but .... maybe ....

Nope it's not....

And looking at Afrihost's R29/gig offering and a lifetime 20gig @ R490 I'm switching to them. Ah I love my Telkom Wimax. It doesn't care.... :D

I noticed that I am now routed via BCSNet - my ping has degraded and I had several nasty lag spikes.

On the positive side the connection seems more solid.

That's exactly the reason why I don't like the wireless companies provide me with the connection & the bandwidth, because they can do whatever they want. However, if I connect on a SAIX account I know I'll be on a SAIX based network. If I connect on IS, I know it will be IS. Nothing will change "magically" :)

I managed to get back on somehow ... Lag is really starting to get irritating

Tried to do arenas tonight .... disconnected 4 times and lost about 80 points in the process. Here is an example of my stellar connection tonight ....

howzit has been very quiet lately... wonder where he's got to.

Pity. Was a good source of support and information to keep us up to date.

I mean lets be honest, most users who demand more than "oh , i have a email today from mumzy and oooh browse facebook"
are on here who need to have the lowest latency , packet loss all the time.

was running well at 260ms with gamemax till about 8pm where it just seems to have died again ...

somethign is going on having constant disconnects on wow and browsing is now shyte as well :(
