Hey guys

So ditched the Sandy Brdige idea in favor of the new mobo. Now looking at upgrading my monitor, which currently is a 19" LG Flatron W1934S.
I have my eyes on an LG 23" IPS with LED backlighting (LGIPS236VPN) which seems like a good monitor and can get it for about 2200.
Has anyone had any experience with this model in particular or can offer up any kind of advice in this regard? I've been out of the debate with regard to monitors for far too long. Please don't let this thread turn into a flaming war, I just want to get some info.

Thanks!

Ryan

Rather get the dell u2311h, It is around R2k from purpleflytrading (I bought one, received it within 24 hours of paying). It uses the same panel as the LG, but with better firmware allowing overdrive, which effectively decreases the response time to half that of the LG. It does not have LED backlighting, but CCFL, allowing for a better gamut as well. Power consumption is not bad either, and it has a USB hub, VGA, DVI, and displayport inputs.

Thanks, will have a look. Purpleflytrading site is down ATM.

Any one with some experience with IPS monitors? And recommendations?

Seems like it has been discontinued, unfortunately. I've been looking for a new screen and thought this may fit the bill, but alas, seems I'm out of luck.

Yeah, I looked at purpleflytrading and it does say it has been discontinued...
This LG IPS monitor looks good and with a 5ms response time seems pretty good! Just wanted to know if has any experience with it?

R3,300 - R3,500 Samsung LA32D550 32" S-PVA LCD TV.

R2,900, 7" smaller, inferior panel quality

No thanks!

I've been toying with the idea, but unfortunately space is an issue and I simply can't sit that close to a screen of that size. I'm in no particular rush, however, so may very well go for that solution once we move to a new house. Until then, I'll simply have to keep an eye out for a good quality 22"/23" screen, which is rarer than one might think these days.

Yeah, minimum 80cm viewing distance required. 90cm - 1m preferable, in my case.

@PostmanPot - Hold on, who said I was paying 2900 for the LG? More like 2200...
And the Samsung LA32D550 at the moment is going for about 3700...that's a R1500 diff...

Some time ago IPS monitors where not recommended for gaming.
IPS monitors being mostly used in graphic design type purposes for it's superior color and viewing angles.
So I guess it depends on what your gonna use it for.

Most of them are now rated at 8ms and I dont know whether this ghosting with motion flow is still a factor.

The Asus ML 21.5" though has a 5ms listed refresh rate.
The LG Ips226V 22" and LGiPS236V 23" has a listed 8ms refresh rate.

Who has it for around R2,200? Sahara? Dunno man, sure there is a perceivable difference, but there is far more to a screen than just its panel, which is why the Dell/HP/etc. flavours are much better.

LA32D550 was going for around R3,300 from Hifi Corp recently. I realise it might be out of budget, but provides far better value for money. Personally I wouldn't be able to handle forking out for a small PC LCD after this monitor tax as the thought is still sinking in.

Based on experience, I would get a second-hand 24", like Samsung T240 16:10 1920x1200 for about R1,200, and save for a 32" LCD TV, due to the incredible value for money it offers.

IPS is perfect for gaming. And on that, some forumite even said his ±7 year old 4:3 19" IPS is faster than more modern 16:9 TN displays. This of course after actual testing, not just GTG estimates thumb sucked by gimmick marketers...

I can get it for 2200 as I have connections at Pinnacle.
That LG has a response time of 5ms, which is good for an IPS.
I would love to get a 32", but that's gonna be out of my student budget for quite sometime...unless I enter uber savings mode.

Up to you on how much you can spend... ;)

I don't feel the gain you're getting is worth R2,200, compared to a "decent" second-hand 23-24" TN LCD which can be had for half the price. Personally I think the aim should be a 32" eventually. If you have 80cm+ viewing distance, nothing beats it in terms of experience and PQ. And it's a TV. Personally I think your options should be either be uber savings mode, or 23-24" TN second-hand to tide you over until you can afford 32" LCD TV in non-uber savings mode. The TN LCD won't lose much value.

I can only tell you what's best in terms of experience, PQ and ultimately value. ;)

If you don't want to spend any more, size limitations or other limiting factors, then go with the LG IPS.

If I could track down a relatively little-used T260 or even T240, that would be the ideal. If only Samsung produced another one of these beauties. Too bad when they were available I was still a poor student.

As far as brands are concerned, I've had philips, not bad, but nothing to write home about. One was great, one was mediocre.

Also had/got LG - wow, what rubbish. I'm ready to throw the piece of shiite away. Will never ever buy this crap
again.

Used acer, merely OK. But does the job.

And then I bought a samsung, and wow, what a great monitor. Definitely the best of the bunch I've tried. I've got a sony TV, but I must admit that I prefer the samsung monitor for the picture quality, especially for photos.

what have you decided to go for in the end? I'm curious as I also now have to decide whether to go for the LG IPS236V or not.

Of the LGs I'd actually prefer the IPS231P, which can at least swivel and hight is adjustable, but my supplier can't get it. I have never had a LG before and must confess Tosser's post about LG being "rubbish" worries me. I have read that this LG range is "budget" and a way for the lower end market to be able to afford LED IPS monitors, so I'm actually not expecting much, but it shouldn't be "rubbish" either!
