Screw you, SABC (Opinion)

The problem is the next step will be to hand you over to debt collectors and then legal proceedings take place.
You don't really want to have your credit record ruined just because of the SABC
Not true.
The credit companies stopped blacklisting for SABC a long time back as it's not allowed / legal.

You didn't ask SABC for credit.

The worst they can do is send you SMS's, false letters of demand, etc, but no blacklisting.

GIYF.

Interesting. So they would need to get a judgement against you?

My mother once got a SABC bill for R0.06 and was handed over to lawyers. When the Lawyers contacted her she said she doesn't mind paying the R0.06 but would like to arrange a six month pay off agreement. She hasn't heard anything again...

SABC is useless and the lawyers who do their debt collecting ain't much better.

I can confirm. Stopped paying many years ago. Lots of SMSs that got progressively meaner and more threatening, blacklisting, handing over to debt collectors, etc. I think a phone call or two as well but mostly SMSs. Very similar to the first year or so of eTolls come to think of it.

Zero impact on credit score. I check with Transunion once a year as a matter of course (you never know!). When I bought my last TV (to hook up to Plex and interwebz at home, no DTSV and hell no SABC) I just piggybacked off somebody else's license. The sales reps at Game/Makro/etc don't care they hate the process just as much as you do.

Screw Hlaudi. 'Miracle' worker? It will be a miracle if he survives the bus his handlers are about to throw him under. Now that is going to be satisfying. Hah.

Yes this is true, when I bought my TV a year ago I bought it with a lot of other items and the sales rep was so overwhelmed he never asked for a copy of a TV licence which I was planning to get by him... So I bought a TV without a licence and still don't have one and won't get one.

I seriously doubt your credit record will be affected by this.

The whining of the TV license "debt" collectors is luckily drowned out by the noise of the choir standing in my office right now, singing my praises.

I also refuse to pay my "tv license".

the sad fact is if you pay for DSTV, a portion of your DSTV subscription is allocated to the SABC.

I believe you are wrong. I recall Multichoice pushing back on this proposal from the SABC to use them as their collection agency. If this has changed, I would love to see the details of this agreement as the Multichoice agreement does not legally allow them to pass on your personal details to anyone AFAIK.

You misunderstand what Baxteen is talking about....

as the mighty Quin pointed out you kinda missed what I was saying.

multichoice pays the SABC to have its channels on DSTV.

and once upon a time, in the long long ago when Mnet still had decoders and aeriels, and Play station had no numbers after them, paying DSTV also paid your TV licence. not sure when that changed, and I dont care TBH.

To buy any TV set with no license needed, visit your local ****** <removed> or **** <removed> .... nooooo problemo ... been buying that way for a long time, also like half the price of Makro.

While everything said is true, we should not forget that the SABC does not consists of one man.

By not paying your licence you are taking the food off the table of an SABC worker and his family who doesn't have any say in the matter.

It is exactly the same mindset that the plundering hordes have who are currently laying the universities to waste. Only thinking about themselves.

They will only understand why you cannot have everything for free, the day they start working and then being told they won't be getting paid, because the next student in line expects everything for free, which they must pay for.

Yeah, I still won't pay for a service I don't want or need or use.
