I have a net monitor to monitor my connection activities ie. my internet, and recently it just started being active all the time... data is constantly getting downloaded, even thou i have nothing open and am not using any thing that will use bandwidth... When i open task manager i see that scvhost - system is using cpu.. when i terminate it, the connection becomes idle no data is transfered for a while.. after 2 or 3 minutes scvhost appears again and my connection becomes active... does anyone know wat it is, as its eating into my cap... i run spy bot and avg and they find nothing

Thanks

Sounds like a virus.

Do an online scan of your PC at kaspersky. It catches more than avg.

Oh, and check your startup locations for weird stuff.

wats the command to see all the tasks that start up..maybe i can prevent something from loading

This from MS

"The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services. Therefore, separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This grouping of services allows for better control and easier debugging."

Thanks

Is ravmon a virus of somesort? it shows up there, but have no idea wat it is

And check... There are plenty of viruses out there with executables named svchost.exe

a quick google will show you exactly what size the svchost.exe should be, and which location it should be found for your specific version of Windows

i found a specific anti virus that removes ravmon.. it removed it and all was fine... until i started up msn live messenger... and now its back doing the same thing

make sure your msn is up to date and that you don't click on any suspect links that get sent to you. if your AV is up to date you shouldn't keep getting reinfected.

Ok i have unistalled msn and my avg is up to date as well as spybot, also has the most recent update.. but i still have the same problem.. ravmon has been removed.. found an anti virus that just removes ravmon..
i boot up windows and its fine for awhile as soon as i start using things it will start dowloading "nothing" again.... Anyone have any idea?

format (after doing backups)

Once, a long time ago, I backed up all my data and the virus alongside it. I subsequently lost a lot of important data. That was shortly before my move to Linux....
Sounds so damn funny thinking about it now. :D

stop the automatic update service and see if it goes away ( only a test for now ) ... right click on my computer and choose manage, goto services and click on automatic updates and click stop
if the cpu usage goes normal you need to change your automatic update from microsoft update to windows update

There is a "Download Identifier" available as a free download for 21 days. Can't remember the name but you can GOOGLE it.
I had the same prob and found it was svthost. The programme allows you to minimize the amount anything can download per day.
I entered 1kb, and after a few days it stopped.
