It might be...only one way to test it...plug a power to usb cable in to it and see if it lights up.

I've got a usb light somewhere, will do that exact thing tonight.

Unless someone around here can quickly test theirs?

Lose as in fails completely?

Or purely just the actual drive is not visible on the PVR?

Did you lose any of the data?

Did a reset of the PVR power bring back the drive?

Drive is just not visible, No data loss, Power down / reset does work. Thats why I'm leaning towards the HDD preservation being problematic. Have disabled it for now.. will see what happens.

Well done ! This is really great.... 220 hours of PVR goodness !

Not only that but I think you are well on your way to creating an effective PVR backup system. Just need some one to crack the encryption !

When I do this i'm going to try the following:

1: Take out existing drive and mirror it on to a new sata drive, then extend the record partition fit the rest of the drive.
2:Get a IDE to SATA converter and swap out the drive.
3: Get one of those external coolers that they use for Xbox and modify the case so that it can be attached right behind the drive.

Been about an hour now... still working. The default preservation was 00H00 to 12H00 (done with that). Still holding thumbs tho!

Interestingly when I was copying from the original 250gig IDE to the 500gig SATA (using my PC) both drives were 10cm from eachother, in the open, the IDE got way hotter than the SATA. And I bought a Western Digital (first time in ages - usually use Seagate), hope it is as good if not better than the .12 Seagate drives...

Sweet ... take some pics! the IDE/SATA converter is the XGR from Matrix PC, only cost R99! It can actually convert IDE to SATA or SATA to IDE. Depends on your needs. Just remember to make sure you use the 5V power and not the 12V (Fried my first converter - but Matrix replaced it as there was no mention of voltage requirements any where for the thing)

As for decrypting... well thats another story, I do it the long way round. I play from my SD-PVR and record to my mVix PVR. Takes long (real time unfortunately). But now I dont see the need to do it with all the additional space!

Very cool modification.

Just some info for the guys talking about cracking the encryption... It is recorded with the same Irdeto encryption that the signal is being broadcast with. You need a CAM and active smart card to decode this.

Thanx guys for all the encouragement and big ups! Will keep ya all informed on the long term performance! Any questions, feel free to PM me..

Yes, going to set something like that up for my dad, looking at getting a DVD writer with a HDD that will do it.

I don't understand why though, it shouldn't be an issue, i wonder if anyone who has replaced IDE with IDE has had the issue?

I replaced mine with 500Gb IDE and has had no problems with it for over a year and a half now.

@ IRG: Good work on the SATA!

So the usb on the pvr doesn't seem to have power. Anyone have any ideas on fixing the issue?

Not having power is the least of the problems,,,,No code implimented.
Nothing can be done

So its wrong to assume that the power could not be somehow enabled? Forget about the actual data code?

how do you copy the software? can you just copy it from the one drive to another?

It was definately the Hard Drive Preservation. No hiccups at all now. So using a SATA drive with the IDE>Sata converter obviously brings in some new parameters when it comes to the source command that comes from the PVR board. So basically it will park the SATA drive but can not wake it again... hmmm. Well makes no difference to me, the drive is running super cool all the time, and I disable all my PC's hibernation and HDD power down features while leaving my PC on 24/7, and those drives run for years...

Besides now to change to a new drive again will be so easy.... Wonder what the size limitations are on the PVR? If I had to pop a 1.5TB drive I would get an additional 500 to 600 hours!
