For those who are interested I'm posting this from my Kubuntu Linux box using my Sony Ericsson K800i as modem and connected together via a USB cable.

Initialization file (/etc/wvdial.conf)

Code:
# wvdial for Vodacom Data. Created by Tazz_tux
# Version 1.0
# wvdial k800i

# Dialer

[Dialer Defaults]

Phone = *99***1#
Username = username
Password = password
Stupid Mode = 1
Dial Command = ATDT
New PPPD = yes

[Dialer k800i]
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
Init2 = ATZ
Init3 = ATE0V1&D2&C1S0=0+IFC=2,2
Init5 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet";
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem

Select 'Phone Mode' when prompted on the phone after connecting it to the PC via the USB cable.
Sometimes using 'Phone = *99***2#' is required under 'Dialer Defaults' (matter of fact the number before the # could be anything between 1 and 10, and depends on the phone configuration/setup).
I left the username and password as above, as I get errors if I don't. You may even be required to leave the name and password blank.

To connect I type:
Code:
sudo wvdial k800i

Some connection reports

Code:
$ wvdial k800i
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATE0V1&D2&C1S0=0+IFC=2,2
ATE0V1&D2&C1S0=0+IFC=2,2
OK
--> Sending: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet";
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT*99***1#
--> Waiting for carrier.
CONNECT

After plugging in the phone via the USB cable I got:

Code:
# lsusb
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Bus 001 Device 011: ID 0fce:d039 Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Code:

And after doing some downloading (just a bit) I get:

Code:
$ ifconfig ppp0
ppp0      Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:--.--.--.--  P-t-P:--.--.--.--  Mask:255.255.255.255

          RX bytes:84796 (82.8 KiB)  TX bytes:14445 (14.1 KiB)

And I disconnect using a simple 'ctrl-c' in the same terminal the connection was made in.

Code:
Caught signal 2: Attempting to exit gracefully...
--> Terminating on signal 15
--> Connect time 19.0 minutes.
--> Disconnecting at Sun Jul 22 18:37:10 2007

Thank you so much, this helped me connect from ubuntu thru my u700

Exactly same setup but with marginal/no success

Hi Guys

I am running Kubuntu 7.10 and am trying to connect to the Internet in exactly the same fashion with my SE k800i as you have explained in your AWESOME post (of course changing the Phone parameter to my *99***5# as this is what I use to connect via my phone from my Windoze machine and the Username, Password fields I initialize to '' which seems to parse fine).

But when connecting (Naturally I also have to run the wvdial k800i internet as root because otherwise there are permission errors on some files that need to be written to involving ppp) my phone lights up and the console reports exactly what you listed in your posting. In fact for all practical purposes I am connected to the Internet, however I am unable to ping any IP addresses or URL's? There is then naturally also no reaction from any of my browsers when attempting to open other websites.

Please could somebody assist me in troubleshooting this one.

Thanks

Posting this from my PC and same K800i phone with Ubuntu 8.04 newly installed.

Using 'ATDT*99***2#' in configuration file.

Saw a peak download speed of 46 kBytes/s on conky during download test (3G enabled).

EDIT:
Posting this from Kubuntu 8.04 :) (dual boot Ubuntu 8.04 and Kubuntu 8.04)
Code:
Apr 27 01:33:25 -- pppd[7138]: pppd 2.4.4 started by root, uid 0
Apr 27 01:33:25 -- pppd[7138]: Using interface ppp0
Apr 27 01:33:25 -- pppd[7138]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyACM0
Apr 27 01:33:25 -- pppd[7138]: Remote message: Congratulations!
Apr 27 01:33:25 -- pppd[7138]: PAP authentication succeeded
:D

SE k810i and fedora core 10 ...

Hello guys,

The last few days I went crazy trying to find the problem. And still searching.
I have a SonyEricsson k810i with 3G service and a Fedora Core 10, running GNOME.

The new NetworkManager applet recognises my phone instantly, I can connect to it, but I can't browse. One thing I noticed is that it defaults the remote IP to 10.64.64.64 .
/etc/resolv.conf has the correct DNS name servers. But I can't ping, can't browse. Nothing.
The Internet Settings in my phone shows that it connects through a proxy server. Tried with that as well... nothing.

I tried the wvdial way. But still, can't even ping the DNS servers.

Don't know what to do next.
Please advise.

Thanks and best regards,
Domi

Feel the same. On vodacom sony w910i or K800i via ubuntu 8.10,
network manager displays the phone but doesn`t connect.
Using wvdial it connects but can`t browse even though phone displays connected to net.
Will post my log later

Hey Guys,

I am very new to Linux, but have to learn about it with my new job.

I have loaded Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop and updated to Jaunty. Also, I know this is an old thread, but why start a new one. :)

I want to use my K800i with a VC prepaid sim for internet access. When I plug it in, ubuntu installs it, but when I want to connect, it looks like it is dialing, but then it disconnects. I have tried the OP, but don't seem to have that file (wvdial).

My X1 works without any problems.

Any advice? :D
