SEACOM construction progress

Expect some delays after it gets handed over (even with turn key) if South Africans are involved.
It would be in NeeTel's best interests to start using the SEACOM cable as soon as it is completed, instead of relying on Telkodemonopolies to access SAT-3 & SAFE at Melkbosstrand, having said that, NeeTel is not exactly punctual when it comes to providing telecoms services...

I can just imagine the cable sitting there for five years while Neotel runs "trials" for 50 people to test the viability of it. The 2010 soccer world cup comes and goes but Neotel is not phased...

I'm not knowledgeable about laying these cables but I do hope that the routes need to be mapped and registered. It'd be a terrible tragedy if SEACOM completes it's cable, opearations start only to find EASSy messing things up when laying their cable over SEACOM's causing damage in the process. It's not revenge or sabotage, it's 'accidental' lol.

Seriously, I hope there's proper planning going into the actual laying of the cables, especially where multiple, competing cables are concerned.
Well the necessary information usually gets through to the right people so there are no accidents and fines can be issued. These "cables" are also not the usual string kind you encounter and even an anchor could have a tough time breaking one. I would rather term them pipelines.

We have a winner

Of course goverment will have nothing to do with the project at this stage, because it actually involves work. Wait until it is complete to see how they fight to make the benefits negligble to the common consumer.

Oh well guess we'll just have to rely on the tsunamis to keep them away. :D
Hopefully the Government will keep their noses out and this project will finish on time.
If government have their way it won't land here. Competition from companies working independantly together is too much for them to handle without the possibility of sticking a grubby finger in the pie.
