I would also hate to see how reliable the IECNS holders networks will be compared to the big guys. I'm pretty sure they are not going to be rolling out fully redundant FO rings running on SDH tecnology as it costs so much.

WebAfrica is one ISP that has already laid cable to connect to Seacom. I am sure there are others that have made their own plans. They have indicated that they fully intend to drop prices as soon as Seacom goes live.
 
I am now seeing reports that the cable is going live sometime in July, any truth it that?
 
How I would love to live in Mtuninzi.... First SAT3 now Seacom, both with landing stations at Mtuninzi!!!

If I were a resident I would have petitioned the operators to install FTTH for all residents as payment for barring access to parts of the beach!

I think you might have missed my point. How ISPs get the bandwidth to the comsumer is a big issue.

aahh, yes. Right. We are unfortunately still stuck with paying Telkom's ADSL line rental fee.... until a viable wireless or other solution comes along. THAT is the real problem... compounded by the fact that when Telkom increases their ADSL line rental fees by 100% later this year, ICASA is going to do bugger all to stop them.

The line rental from Telkom is only one part of your Internet bill. The savings will come from your ISP costs. Didn't you know that?

Look, I know this is hard for your pea-brain to comprehend. But trust me. At least some of us know what we are talking about. Just go back under your rock and relax. The smarter parts of our species have got this under control.
 
I don't pay line rental - too smart for that. But I hear you. The prices will come down.
If they don't then just be careful that you don't come down...

Stupid Question time:

Assuming all this cable and bandwidth becomes available (whenever), would this impact Latency/connection quality in any manner? My un-technical mind says yes, wouldn't the contention ratios decrease or is the extra cable simply a straight increase in the amount of data peeps can download (i.e. their caps)?

Ja, the rumour is that there will be a general improvement and less latency or downtime problems.
