The article was about ISPs that use SEACOM.

Telkom and WA do not use SEACOM, but exclusively use SAT-3 and SAFE, hence they were not mentioned.

Sorry moggie, but I don't know enough about who uses what, and the article does not specify that it is only about SEACOM ISP's, or who isn't affected, so as a non-affected Telkom ISP user I have to call it biased, sensationalist or non-acknowledging

I can live with these outages for the price on my uncapped MWeb, but do keep 1GB of WA prepaid for just such a problem.

with all these outages,we should be demanding compensation from our next bill, ie if we lose 4 days then 4 days rands worth should be deducted from the august bill, this is an all too common occurance

Exactly, instead of throwing all your toys and blaming everybody for your lack of planning, you plan for these contingencies.

I bet you take regular backups too!

All the whingers posting here should take a leaf from your book.

I use Telkom at home, so not affected.

At work we had to switch from Axxess (ISDSL) to our backup Telkom SA (only 5GB) facility. Hope the 5GB lasts until Seacom is fixed.

Pathetic how SA gets shafted for FIFA's requirements

Excuse me! An article on how ISP's are affected by the SEACOM outage doesn't mention the fact that Telkom ISP's users aren't affected at all??? Come on "Staff Writer", a little more objective, fair reporting please.

The article specifically mentions that saix users are not affected. it is common knowledge that telkom isp uses SAT3, telkom is the majority shareholder of SAT3!

I'm guessing, but I suspect that FIFA's broadband requirements have spurred the implementation of additional capacity.

maybe someone with knowledge can comment?

Your suspicions are well founded. We will benefit post-SWC.

Telkom aren't to blame for any of these issues folks. Direct your wrath at Neotel and friends...

The author forgot to add Webafrica as on of the "lucky ones' as far as I am aware they have SAIX bandwidth, hence their lack of uncapped accounts

For the price of MWeb 4mbps uncapped I can put up with these odd down times as annoying as they can be. Like some others here I keep pre-paid WA in reserve. When the connection bombs just update the router with WA details and off we go.
I just have to block youtube and the likes on my network as the kids have gotten used to watching what they like when they like and will chew up the pre-paid in no time. So while on WA I put restrictions in place. When MWeb comes back online restrictions are lifted. Sound just like an ISP :)

As long as I get basic web use during the day for my work and good local connectivity at night for XBox Live I am happy.
