SEACOM scoops awards

On the heels of the recently announced groundbreaking of the project’s cable landing stations sites in Mozambique and Kenya, the SEACOM undersea cable project was the recipient of three awards at Monday night's 2008 Africa investor Infrastructure Awards event held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

LOL, how do you win an award when you have not actually produced anything in your line of work yet? Or has Seacom gone live in any North African countries yet?

Well the way I read it is that, they're being awarded for exactly what they've done and what the awards are for; Investing in Africa.

Kudos to them for winning it, but it also goes to show that they're at the forefront of making a difference to the country and the continent.

This award was not given (I would think) on performance of the Seacom Cable, but rather for the investment they have made to the continent to bring more affordable bandwidth to Africa.

Commenting on the awards, Brian Herlihy, SEACOM President, said: “SEACOM is honored to have been recognized by Africa investor Infrastructure for its effort in bringing much needed bandwidth connectivity to east and southern Africa. I would like to thank our shareholders, financiers and advisors including, Hunton & Williams, Bell Dewar & Hall and Herbert Smith, in making this project a success for all its stakeholders. We look forward to continue working together as we race towards our ready for service date of June 2009.

AFRICA INVESTOR LAUNCHES INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT AWARDS

Investors in Africa's fast-growing infrastructure sectors have a new platform to measure their performance against thanks to the launch of the Ai Infrastructure investor awards to be held 30 October alongside the Ai Infrastructure investor Summit in Johannesburg. Organised by UK based Africa investor, the awards will recognise achievements across the main infrastructure sectors in Africa and reward the personalities driving transactions and improving the continents infrastructure investment climate. Awards will be presented for: Developer of the year, Power deal of the year, Transport deal of the year, ICT/Telecoms deal of the year, Water deal of the year, Social Infrastructure deal of the year, Oil & Gas deal of the year, PPP Champion of the year, Infrastructure fund of the year, Infrastructure regulator of the year, Sponsor of the year, Bank arranger of the year, Legal adviser of the year and Adviser of the year.

Speaking during the inauguration of the awards, Dr Bamanga Tukur, Chair of the Judging panel and the NEPAD Business Group said "These awards are designed to recognise and reward both public and private sector groups that have made an outstanding contribution to the growth of infrastructure investment in Africa," He went on to say "We have no doubt these awards will raise much needed awareness about the importance of establishing investor friendly infrastructure environments, which in turn directly support the creation of jobs and the attainment of the MDG's.

So yes, they're not active, but that's not what these awards are intended for, rather a nice little spin to have investors get an award to notch up on their list of "Things we have done" :p
