I see they are talking about this going live in a matter of months.

Question to the IT guru's on the forum is there any chance that this will lead to lower latency?

Yes... in theory there should be a **tiny** drop in latency.
Dont expect a 200 ms drop... wont happen, its still damn far to the EU.

The two things that will make a difference is the fact that the fibre being used is of much newer technology than the current old outdated SAT3 pipeline, also the line would not be as congested as the current overpriced SAT3 line.

I am expecting a tiny drop in latency and hopefully a bit of a price drop to us as the consumer. Best is to wait and see how this line would be regulated and controlled.

I expect pings to be around 140-200ms range. It all depends on how many hops/switches etc between us.

I won't expect a price drop

And you're still subject to the contention ratio of Neotel/Telkom so I won't expect much of a change at all except the widening of my a-hole as they bore down deeper

I would ask you ISP if they could shut down one Protocol. In Germany we call it "Fast Path" and it will drop you Ping from 60 to 5 ms. It's a Protocol that is there that test for failures like TCP/IP but since almost everything goes over TCP you don't need the DSL Protocol since TCP already has failure testing.

Ye! Like it was back in the ISDN days :) Hopefully they do away with shaping completely. That's whats causing this 700+ms lag.

The high latency on shaped accounts is actually due to all traffic being routed via Hong Kong. Traffic on unshaped accounts get routed directly to Europe.

SAIX does not shape any gaming traffic.

Wholesale prices will definitely drop ... the more important question to many of us is what, if anything, will happen to retail prices.

It will drop for IS and neotel customers and thats what the line is there for. Saix will proberly have to keep up with the competition and drop their prices as well. So we will have to wait n see

IS will be trying to get more customers from saix by offering specials, I think they have invested alot in the line and will want to make the cash back asap that should be done by offering cheaper internet that all the saix users wont be able to refuse. I think we will see a difference once everything is up and running.

I will be hanging in for another month or so to see how the other ISPs respond before jumping ship!

I just wish other ISP's offered the multi-realm switching.
Thats the one thing keeping me with Webafrica. Their unshaped BW costs me a sh1teload every month.

The Axxess 626 package is pretty awsome, just a pity they only cater for one network provider.

Would be interresting to see which ISP's will be offering Seacom BW.
