seagate 7200.11 1.5TB problems?

As long as your drive has the newer, problem-free firmware it'll be fine. I bought 3 1.5TB drives a few months ago that have the correct firmware, so you should be fine.

you can always google news feeds about the 1.5tb? and see if there is anything about it.. or go have a look at seagates website.

Now, in the 1.5tb drives, there are 2 main revisions. the the product line that gets the CC* firmware, and the line that gets the SD* firmware. They came out with firmware CC1H and SD1A to fix these issues and started issuing them.

You should be able to see the firmware version on the printed label on the hard drive itself.

The news I've been getting from retailers and distributors is that 7200.11 drives have been disasters even after the firmware update. The return number on them are much much higher that 7200.10 or 7200.12 drives. usually 3-5 times more returns per unit sold.

Personally, Ive lost 2 7200.11 drives, a 1.5TB to frimware issue before the update and a 500GB that started excessive vibration and clicking.

I've now switch over the WD as preferred hard drive brand. I've bought 4 1.5tb and 2 1TB drives recently (about 4 months back), they all still work fine.

Yes you pay more for WD, but there's a good reason why. Remember that Seagate bought Maxtor. What do you think they are using maxtor factories for? 7200.11...?
Also note that seagate used to offer 5 year warranties as standard. Recently they dropped it to 3. What does that tell you about the confidence in their product?
