Seagate Momentus

After an initial drive failure (due to an encounter with a cricket ball :)) I'm on my second one. Apart from a very brief delay coming out of sleep on my Macbook Pro I have had no issues.

I bought one a few weeks back, took it back the very next day. Was terrible.

Very noisy, Mac book vibrated like mad, applications would freeze randomly and most noticeably my macbook was overheating at a alarming rate.

Not a good experience.

It seems some Macbook users are suffering similar problems with many 7200rpm drives so your experience could have happened with a non-hybrid drive as well.
Seagate has released new firmware for the Momentus XP and Apple has also released a firmware update for their products with 7200rpm drives as a workaround.

The common denominator here is the Macbook, the drives work fine in other products so I don't think it is fair to blame the HDD while the problem is exclusive to Apple products by the looks of things.

So if you purchased a Momentus XT or another 7200rpm drive for your Macbook it would be wise to go to the HDD manufacturers site and get the latest firmware for you drive as well as the latest EFI firmware (and drive related firmware if it came with a 7200rpm drive from the factory) available from Apple to rectify the situation.

Ok, I shall just blame my Macbook then

Bad Macbook bad!

I dunno . . . the problematic drives all seem to be seagate so both deserve to be in the spotlight me thinks.

Eish, Mac owners really are touchy...

I wasn't bashing anyone, I even made some suggestions on how to possibly circumvent the issues, oh well.

Edit: I can't actually believe this response.

Hi All

A few Momentus XT's in HP notebook workstations here for 3 months now.. and no problems at all. Quiet and quick... cannot offer anything other than positive anecdotal experience...

HP laptops have like a rubber block pad on each corner of the HDD cradle - When i bought my XT i checked the firmware & it was the 2nd one - No vibration on my laptop from this drive.
Do the Mac's have the rubber blocks on there HDD cradle?

The hdd is cradled on the sides by screws which slide into rubber anchors.

Here's the HP deal - the blue rubber blocks - pulled the 1 leg is off,its on top of the HDD there - basically the HDD ends up rubber mounted

lol Ponder. I am not getting touchy, not at all :p

Just seems obscene to blame the Macbook when clearly it is the HDD to blame.

Hey is there still this issue? These Momentus XT drives are a reasonable price for SSD-like performance...

Yeah I am sure it is. Unless the firmware update actually fixes the issues.

I haven't heard anyone comment on this.

Personally the issues I had I feel were beyond just a simple firmware fix.

Hell man... I got the XT BECAUSE my 7200rpm crashed..!

Have been using mine for 5 months now on a Sony Vaio F12. Pretty happy with it. Look, it is NOT an SSD replacement, but the hybrid does seem "speedier" than the stock 5400rpm I had in the machine (the 8GB ram and i7 quad CPU also helps).

Getting an 17" 2011 Macbook Pro at work (semi stock but upgraded RAM to 8GB and Matte Full HD Screen). Will see how it goes with the stock 5400rpm 750Gb drive (but sure it will be replaced soon). SSD is just rediculous at R4000 for 128GB :(. Yes the speed will be nice, but encoding large video files has more to do with the CPU/GPU in any case (and the machine can do the encoding when I am sleeping, so an SSD not worth it yet)...
