Search Warrant

They want to catch people driving around with illegal items. Why would you bitch about it unless you have something to hide...

Exactly - only a guilty person would complain. Unless your going to jump on the American bandwagon and complain how it effects your privacy rights carp!

At a police roadblock they have the right to search you car. That is the reason for the search. I have noticed this weekend in PTA I drove through 2 Police roadblocks. It was a pleasant surprize. They searched my car, checked my engine and VIN number and sent me off.

I think it's a great way to prevent crime. Here in Jo'Burg we only get Roadblocks for traffic fines  As long as my fines are paid I can drive with 50 AK's in the boot.

I tried to dodge one road block, only to find another one this past weekend. I was very relieved to be set free coz i didn't have any warrants/outstanding fines.
There was this lady who got arrested and I think she was going on holiday with her family.

Oh I completely agree Pitbull, only a guilty person will deny them access and that gives them the suspicion they need...

and I've yet to deny them when they've asked, I've got nothing to hide.

I just think legally they're supposed to have a warrant to search...

So you wouldn't mind if the cops came into your house and searched it whenever they felt like it? After all you're not guilty so you shouldn't complain. What if they monitored your phone and internet traffic, intercepted your mail. You don't have anything to hide do you so what's the problem?

Thats where the problem is.

:D

Now why would the cops just barge into my house? Surely if they do there is a reason otherwise it would be happening all the time all over the place which it does not. Monitoring my e mails and calls? I have no problem with that, I have nothing to hide and they are welcome to listen, I would even give them permission to monitor my mail and calls. I really have nothing that they would consider very interesting.

Good grief! Its a long stretch from searching your car to coming into your house anytime they like and searching it?

They already do - ever heard of echelon?

Imagine, the cops would have to get warrents for every car on the road to be able to search them. LoL

Its an extreme example I know, I was just saying that privacy does have value and I don't think that police should have the right to search your car at any time at will. Obviously they need to be able to under some circumstances but I think it should be more limited. And no, I don't have anything to hide.

i agree - they shouldn't be allowed to just stop a car anytime and search it without a good reason. I think its different at a roadblock though as its an 'official' setup where all cars can and should be searched.

I also wouldn't want a cop to walk over to my car in the parking lot and says he's going to search it (unless he sees the hand hanging out of the boot)

Exactly. It depends on the roadblock I think, if they set up a roadblock because 5 guys just escaped from the prison down the road then they've got a good reason and justification to search. If they just randomly set them up then I'm not so sure they should be able to search every car. Its difficult to get the balance right.

I disagree fully.

Even if I have to drive through 20 Police roadblocks to get home. I know SA will be a safer place. Each and everyone of you complaining right now should not cry if you are a victim of crime.

"Where is your warrant" .... oms get real guys

The police have the right to search your vehicle if they have reason to believe that they might find something. Thats the bottom line.

It sounds screwed up, but thats just how it is. You guys are living in a perfect world, where you need warrents for everything.

Whats next, do they need warrents to search you as well?

I don't necessarily think they should always need a warrant but at least some basis for suspicion. I don't think they should have a right to search everyone and their car at any time, there needs to be a certain standard of suspicion or probable cause that should be met.

Pls explain your logic to me if you please...

Does serial killers look any different to me and you ?
Do they need to pull over Black drivers only ?

How do you get to choose who looks suspicious and who doesn't ?

I say search ever gwd damn vehicle on the road !!!!!!

Thats the beauty of the police. They could always just say, they had reason to believe the car was stolen, they had reason to believe there was drugs in your car, they had reason to believe bla bla bla.

They can say anything, it wont be frowned upon, cos they are doing their job to try and make the roads/country safer.
