They are different minimum efficiency thresholds given by some standards body, bronze is something like 80%, silver 84%, etc... I don't really know the exact values, since it is pretty useless. The ratings are given at a temperature lower than normal operating temperature, and efficiency differs depending on voltage (our 220v will give better efficiency vs US 110v), so it is better to check efficiency values of reviews.
 
Seeing that this is kinda on topic and I dont wanna create a whole new thread. Anyone heard of Unique PSUs, that is the only PSU esquire sell and they have great value. For a 1000W Unique PSU it is only R1000.

So has anyone used Unique PSUs before or head about them?
 
I have never heard of that brand of PSU's and I would definitely not buy a 750W+ PSU that costs less than R1000.

Esquire recently started doing Aerocool PSUs, which are quite good. At least a helluva lot better than Unique.
 
Yeah, you can get modular AeroCool 80%+ rated PSU's for a very reasonable (same as like Corsair TX / CoolerMaster GX which aren't modular) price
 
dam :P thought that price was too good to be true. I checked the aerocool products and they have really good prices except no 850W (which is wat I am actually looking for) =/ Ooh well
 
Nicko: any specific reason you want 850W? 650W should be more than enough for most high end PC's.
 
750W would suffice for 6870 in CF and it should allow a big margin for overclocking the CPU and both graphics cards!

At full load the GTX 460 1GB draws more power than the HD 6870.
To paint you a picture: I've managed to overclock my i7 940 from 2.9 to 3.9GHz (1.40V) and both my GTX 460's from 725/3600 (0.975V) to 787/4460 (1.025V) and the maximum power consumed (measured at AC input) was 530W/540VA.
If you take my PSU's efficiency in consideration (~90%), it means that the components never even drew 500W in total!

So it would be better if you rather go for 750W instead of 650W, just to ensure that your PSU doesn't make a noise and become so hot, but from a minimum requirements point of view the 650W PSU should suffice.

Update:
Nicko: I would strongly advise you to get a different (bigger) SSD. eg. the G.Skill Phoenix 120GB SSD goes for around R2200, which is both cheaper and bigger :)

THANKS, that can really save me quite a bit of money. I will be able to get the 700W Aerocool from Esquire for R750.

and about my SSD, I choose the OCZ Vertex 2 because it performed better and cuz from where I am getting it from it is cheaper (my m8 is getting it from Taiwan).

Wow that OCZ vertex 2 SSD is expensive. I got mine from comx computers for under R2000 http://www.comx.co.za/OCZSSD2-2VTXE...5-SSD-Information-Price-Buy-Cheap-p-36026.php

My bet is to look elsewhere. You can get the products cheaper elsewhere
 
I still didn't get the VX550 and this guy on Carbon is selling his Antec Trio 650W for R600... I have to admit the unit is BUTT ugly, it looks like a Fallout prop

but I've read it's a pretty good quality unit... YAY or NAY?

yeah thats what i thought, they just make the PSU's and then Corsair and etc decide if its good enough for there brand

I wouldn't say 90%... quite a bit of the "lower" PSUs are made by CWT... VX550 included
