Second biggest maize crop for S.A sparks crises

Damn, farming is k a k hey.

If you plant and you loose some/all of you crop then you loose, if you plant and loose none of your crop then you still loose.

They're simply going to have to diversify their crops whilst at the same time pressuring government for more storage space for the bumper-crop.
I am pretty damn sure the government can get their act together long enough to do a BEE deal to build more silos.

And then the pressure must begin for storage space for the diversified crops.

It's government's job to plan and support the countries industries, it's time they did that.

We have a sad legacey of Co-Ops in this country: They conditioned farmers not to focus on the business side, protected the industry too much, controlled exit prices and limited access to resources.

After the need for Co-Ops dissapeared in the 90's, it has taken nearly two decades for use to appreciate that they actually did have some value in the end.


There was also a wonderful documentary a few years back "The Economy of Food" that highlighted how the world goes hungry as governments and corps protect their own interests. The world produces enough maize to feed each individual 4'000kJs worth each day (thats the recommended intake of an adult)!

The European Union destroys Euro 300 Million each week worth of oversupplied meat - stuff is still 100% fine when it hits the dumbs.

Labour is cheaper in SA and the farmers tend to see it as a job-creation scheme to have a lot of workers.

no most farmers are going meganies and getting rid of workers for security reasons.

Farmers overseas can't afford to hire labourers otherwise they would.

What do you do for a living? Sit on a chair in front of a pc perhaps?

But have you actually seen what the average labourer earns. I was shocked when I lived amongst the Brits farmers to hear what they really pay the guys. Descent wages and working conditions is still limited to a few areas.

Yet skilled farm labour is often more cost effect than unskilled. One example is Sheep Sheering in the Karoo, or the harvester crews in the OFS. Its cheaper for the farmer to outsource and he gets better results than attempt to use his own unskilled staff.

Actually farmers overseas use labour on demand but its all skilled and more efficent than our unskilled labour force.

Actually yes. I'm a software developer but I do follow farming trends (as mentioned, my mothers husband is an OZ farmer and my Dad an ex-farmer working in the States on farms there)

So you call farmers lazy when spend your time vegging in front of a computer? lol, thats quite funny.
 
@cbrunsdonza, thanks for reminding me about the Co-Ops, I shall be doing some research around that.
And, all that meat!
