Second generation Blu-ray drives in SA

I don't know that I see the sense in paying 5K for a writer and R200 a shot for the disks as a means of backing up data. For that kind of money I could buy a few new HDDs which would certainly be more durable than a Blu-ray disk.

This kind of comparison is a classic linear programming case, currently Blu-Ray starts off more expensive than HDD and the plotted line is steeper than HDD too, so at present no amount of capacity desired will be cheaper on BR than HDD, in comparison DVD is easily cheaper than HDD which shows its maturity as the current de facto optical format.

The Blu-Ray recorders at R1,500 and discs at about R50 each will allow it to match HDD and gain some real momentum, so its a matter of time i guess, roll on economies of scale, i suspect BR might reach critical mass sooner than its predecessors

they starting the same way as when dvd's started....the price will drop

The data is packed so densely on the disks I reckon that they will be so easy to scratch. Already having issues with DVDs. The best money I spent was on my external hard drive. If we had decent connections/prices in South Africa then we could just backup using a service like JungleDisk...

Sony drop prices ? Dream on... This is going to take a long time without any competition. They actually hiked the prices significantly after HDDVD droped out.

The BWU-200S feature significant technology enhancements and retails at approximately R5000.00 inclusive of V.A.T., almost R1500.00 less than the first generation model

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

They muat be f....ed in their heads.

I have just received (from the UK) the LG GGW-H20L Blu-Ray Disc Re-Writer & HD DVD-Rom SATA and paid 170 Pounds which equates to R2720, inclusive of postage, and yes I have no warranty cover here in SA but can always send it back to the UK if anything goes wrong. Now, not taking warranty into consideration, why the hell is the Sony drive almost twice the cost? We have no import duties on electronics in SA do we? Is Sony just milking the market? At that cost the easier option would be another (external) SATA HD.

Just get a Playstation 3. It's the cheapest BD player out there and its software can be upgraded so that it will always stay with the current Blueray version.
