Second Hand Honda Civic

Please explain the difference between FN2 and FD2?

FN2 = sedan? Only difference?

It's the proper TYPE R, not the (save the earth @8000rpm) ones we have here and throughout Europe.

Same K20 motor as in the tree hugger version but more refined and a more aggressive cam profile resulting in 165 kw and 215nm of pure natural power!

Handling is superb, although the local FN2 holds well around the twisty's this takes it up a few notches, comes standard with 18" semi's, need I say more...

And if you have some spare change I know of a white 1 in SA, going for R350 000 with only 11 000 kms.

Then there's also the 180kW Mugen version and a 190kW Mugen Type-RR but I'm not sure if that made it to production.

My post was based on experience of hatchback models. Haven't been inside a sedan yet... Don't want to either, the hatch is by far the better option! What's your budget for a second-hand Civic?

I bought my VXi new in 2006 and have never looked back. It's a very good car that hasn't given me even a single day's problem. Apart from the usual second hand buying tips, I can't think of anything specific to this car to look out for. Mine still goes very well.

The one thing you'll notice about the car though is that the gearbox is not the best so gearshifts aren't always as smooth as you'd expect. The clutch is also a bit iffy and you can burn it in traffic on an uphill if you get a bit heavy footed (which I've done twice). Other than that it drives very well, has ample space and looks good inside. Maybe the one piece of advice I could give is that you shouldn't settle for anything but the VXi as the lower models don't come with climate control, steering wheel controls, cruise control and mags...

Dude...you burnt the clutch out twice? :D Thats got nothing to do with the specific car though. If you drive any manual car like that, you will burn out the clutch! Use the handbrake for hills...trying to use clutch control on hills is just asking for trouble...not surprised you been through 2 clutches!

My wife has the VXI, and have to agree about the gearbox. Its not as smooth as you would want it, but otherwise its a fantastic car. Have not had 1 days trouble in the 3 years she has owned it.

I was speaking to a friend of mine who says visibility out the rear window is a bit poor. Any other hatch drivers agree/disagree? Gah, being in the USA while car hunting is frustrating!

It is not that bad as people make it out to be. It is a lil bit more restricted than a car with no spoiler running through the middle of the windscreen, but which other cars come standard with a built in headlight blocker :) It is not that bad, and I got used to mine so quickly, do not even notice it anymore

Same here.

+1

Its gonna be my last few days having my civic, very sad to let her go, great car, but moving to greener pastures :)

SACRILEGE!

(Though the S2000 is a nice replacement - keeping it in the Honda family!)

Yeah, had to keep it in the Honda family
anyways, there is no other car that i like on the road, expet for expensive cars, dnt like GTI's ST's etc (not saying they bad cars)

It's true the Civic gearbox is a bag of bolts. The clutch is ridiculously stupid as is the fly by wire throttle, which if you release it gently in traffic will ram your head in to the windscreen or give you whiplash if you tap it. I sold it because of that. Apparently, some software upgrade was supposed to fix it, but it didn't. If they just smoothed the throttle and gearbox you'd have a winner.
