Second hand phone > transfer IMEI

I have searched the forums and the SP sites. I am wanting to buy a second hand phone from Cash Converters.

Is there anyway I can have the IMEI transferred into my name - to prevent the previous owner from having the phone blacklisted etc.

I would have proof that the phone has been bought and paid in full by myself.

you wont need to do that, if the previos owner does try anything like that cash converters will have the sale on file and they wil ahve to sort that out.

It could be the phone was stolen and then sold to Cash Converters.

No normal person would sell a phone to Cash Converters as its akin to giving it to them for mahala

Easiest would be to obtain the IMEI number from the phone, then ask the Voda/MTN rep on myBB to check if it is blacklisted.

Another method is to put a working SIM into said phone and switch it on & check if it'll make outgoing calls.

I'm sure Cash Converters check on that sort of thing before they buy the phone. But it won't hurt to check on your side.

dude when you not in the mood to put stuff on sale in the clasifieds and waiting a while for a buyer or risk getting scammed cash converters is an easy option, no wait for cash of course they do offer very little (I think like a quater of what they will sell it for)

The only reason of doing this would be if you wanted to transfer legally obtained (from CC) IMEI number to a stolen phone.

Thanks for the replies. Firstly, I went to Cash Converters because they are reputable, and I did not want to take the chance of buying a stolen phone... Secondly, the service and resolution I have got from Cash Converters has been top-notch (which is why I went and still will go to them in future).

The facts are: I got a phone from Cash Converters. When I got home, it would not connect to a network. A call to the SP showed that the phone had been blacklisted.

Back to Cash Converters - after some investigation, it turned out the previous owner had had it blacklisted some days after having sold it on to them (so it had passed all their checks etc.) The conclusion is that one can sell a phone on, and them some time later report it as stolen and claim from insurance (i.e. double pay out?).

Thus the point of my original question – if I buy a legitimate phone, how can I get my SP to transfer the IMEI to my name to prevent a re-occurrence of a dishonest previous owner blacklisting at some future time?

So it is not for any of the not-so-honest reasons suggested by some posts above!

Fact that you had been exposed to the crime (or just negligence - we don't really know) doesn't give you rights to commit another crime. Simple answer.

Thanks for the 'simple' but Trolling answer. If you read my post properly, you will see I am asking the Vodacom/MTN/CellC MyBB representatives here how I can do the IMEI transfer LEGALLY through one of the SPs. And if this is even possible.

Because **** happens...
I bought a blackberry from a "private seller" and asked him for the IMEI number to check if the phone is not blacklisted/stolen before i gave him the cash. Vodacom checked and acknowledged that it was not blacklisted (was a vodacom phone).
TWO days later the phone got blacklisted. Turns out i got scammed I called Vodacom, they confirmed it has been reported stolen the previous day and is blacklisted. Bye bye cash/phone. They asked me to take it to the police and fill out an affidavit etc.

Oh, and the guy i bought it from disappeared.

That is exactly why I'm trying to find out how to do this in a legal manner - I don't want to take the chance of losing both money and phone after the 3 month Cash Crusaders warranty is up.

Surely there must be way that one can ask the SPs to move an IMEI into one's name - particularly if one has proof-of-purchase etc. from a reputable business like Cash Crusaders.

goes back to my point, if a user sells a phone to cash converters then gets the phone black listed as stolen, cash converters is responsible (even if its more then 3 months) since in effect they are selling stolen goods (even if just fraud by seller) they are responsible for checking that the phones are not stolen if not they could be clsoed down

Yep, Cash Crusaders have been very good in this instance. They gave the guy a couple of days to come in and sort things out - but just spoke to them now and it seems he has not shown up - so they have laid a charge with SAPS so it doesn't look good for the original owner.

They have gladly refunded me, and regret the inconvenience that has been caused. I feel sorry for them because they really did go out of their way.

I find it strange that our law (RICA) in this case does not seem to allow for the legal transfer of an IMEI to a new owner when dealing with the resale (through reputable businesses) of cell phones. One would think such a process/register would protect both the consumer and the business involved.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

I get your point phones should be more like a car in terms of the Imei being linked to one person like the VIN number.

I gave you the only honest affirmative anwser. You say it is trolling, then make your own investigation and prove. If you can't prove you should apologise I think.
You are in possession of stolen goods. As long matter is not resolved with original owner, you have only one option: return stolen goods and get money back. Anything else is making things wrong.
And while talking about trolling, I am more convinced now your thread was just trolling.
