Hi all,
I am looking at buying a vehicle. Realistically I can afford max R120k. I would ideally like a vehicle capable of some semi off road use.
I have spotted a single owner (elderly gentleman) Hyundai Tucson GLS 2007 with 81k. Visibly it's in excellent condition and looks to have lived in a garage all its life. It's completely original and has a full service history. It's selling for R115k inclusive of registration and on road costs. It is black and has a few surface scratches.
I'm worried about the fact that its already 7 years old and after I've paid the vehicle off it will be 12...
Please, I would really appreciate any advice for or against this purchase.

Thanks in advance.

Married? Kids?

Nope not married, just myself and girlfriend and pets.
I'm worried that some parts, rubbers, bushes etc from what I've heard, can start giving in as they age, regardless of mileage.
U can't afford a really expensive mistake. I am considering a 2yr / 60k extended warranty.

Don't get suckered by extended warranties. They are a complete con. The chances of you incurring an expensive repair within those 2 years or 60k km are so slim that you are better off saving your cash and paying for any repairs yourself.

Good luck financing it. The car is 7 years old, not sure if the banks have changed, but in the past you really struggled to finance a car older than 5 years.

I got almost the exact same deal on my Tucson. It is a great vehicle and if it's had all it's services done is incredibly reliable. I bought mine with just under 70 on the clock with full service history last year for 125k.

I would say go for it. Just make sure the tires are in good condition.

Mfc wool probably finance it for just above prime.

Regarding financing, I think I need to make up any shortfall of book value vs retail value up with a deposit, which I have, and the dealer doesn't seem to think I'll have any problem financing. I am pre approved by ABSA albeit on a different vehicle (same price)

And well noted regarding the warranty, I've heard it's not worth it, but I have nightmares of a engine seize after 20k...and what do I do then? Burn it?

I financed a 2003 SLK in december last year.

The chances of an engine seizing are so slim it's not even worth worrying about. Even if it did happen I doubt the extended warranty would cover it in any case. If you read the fine print of an extended warranty you will be shocked at what these sharks do and don't cover. I've heard plenty horror stories of people being shafted by extended warranties that are completely worthless when the worst happens.

Quite positive feedback thus far, which is great, as I'm dead keen on the vehicle, but wary at the same time

I'll keep that in mind then, thanks

Budget for some expensive services coming up. If I remember correctly, the cambelt is due at 90k - though it should probably have been done at 5 years. You might want to check that.

Yeah I'm calling hyundai agents at the moment to quote me on 90k service based on cambelt change etc, shot

Go buy a reconned jap import for R5k.

Hyundai reckons 4k for a full 90k service including belts etc
