I am currently in Sedgefield and using an E220 modem, getting speeds of around 1800/up and 320 down.

But I hear around town that the speeds have recently improved greatly, yet mine is the same as when I was last down here - 2008.

Anyone from Sedgefield getting better speeds on Vodacom HSDPA?

1800/320 is pretty much 100% of the device/profile you're using. Unless you're paying for the 3.6 service?

So, it looks like you've been getting a good service there for quite a while.

Sure, service is good - no complaints.

I am paying for the 3.6 service though and the matter of the tower having been upgraded being discussed locally, hence my enquiry - obviously looking for best option always:)

Do you mean 1800 upload and 320 download? Or 1800 download and 320 upload?

Up/down or down/up

Sorry, my bad - thanks for pointing out - the 1800 is the download speed.

Hmmm....what firmware are you using on your E220?

If you're paying for 3.6, then you should be getting slightly more than 1800, maybe 2000 or a little more.

Could be bandwidth limits on the tower? Do you know what tower you're connecting to?

Normally when you see exactly 1800, it typically implies a software throttle on the network, i.e. it's a 3.6 device on the 1.8 profile.

It is not 1800 exactly, sometimes over and others just close to it.

It seems the tower concerned is the main one, top of the hill.

I am using the latest firmware, got it from a V3G service point in Tableview a few weeks ago.

How do I check what profile it is set to, cannot see anything under 'device' or 'connection' - manager directories?

Thx so far, much appreciated.

Thx again Nuyork,

Profile setting - uplink is at 1308 and downlink 1792 according to the MDMA (Magic tool, wow).

Firmware is: 11.117.09.00.00

Interesting? And you're paying the R49 a month for the 3.6 service? Cause it doesn't seem activated on your SIM then if your profile isn't setup.

Contact 082 155 and ask them if your SIM is provisioned for the 3.6 service.

Vodacom should start one of those 'speak to a live consultant' on their website ....

Yup, as I suspected, you're not on the 3.6 profile but rather on the 1.8 profile.

Are you sure you're paying for 3.6? Maybe phone 155 and ask them to check for you.

OmniMo: slightly off topic, but are you having any issues with Firmware is: 11.117.09.00.00? I've experienced a few problems with that firmware, like random disconnects, slow speeds, unable to connect, and usually downgrading back to the older firmware has sorted out the issue. But just wanted to find out if you're working fine with it?

Firmware

Firmware has been working fine, no issues whatsoever.

Wow - I just checked about the 3.6 service and was told that I need to get approval from a Government Department to do so....

Upon closer inquiry, it turns out that this (Prepaid) number used to be that of a Government employee and hence the system not accepting the command SMS's.

Which would also explain why I keep getting funny SMS's re other account payments due, etc.

It never showed an error message or anything of the sorts though. And I am frankly not sure whether the amounts were taken off, how many times ,etc.

The advice from the 3G shop guy is to rather get a new SIM once this data bundle is exhausted. It makes some sense, but what about things like talking points, address books on v4me, etc.

Apparently not an unique situation, so one would expect some solution to have been worked out, maybe?

Lastly, and referring to the coverage re HSUPA of a while ago - is Vodacom the only network charging for 3.6 and for how long still?

I also have noticed some press about Vodacom data rates being reviewed, any news as to timelines - If I have to change SIM and buy a bundle, this will be relevant:)

This what I was referring to earlier as to the R 49 charge:
Vodacom scraps R 49.00 fee for higher upload speeds

Vodacom has made its High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA), which promises upload speeds in excess of 1 Mbps, free to all its mobile broadband subscribers.

Previously only subscribers who paid an additional R 49.00 per month for 3.6 Mbps HSDPA had access to HSUPA.

Vodacom recently revealed that around 2.5% of its current mobile broadband users have subscribed to the R 49.00 service which promises higher download and access speeds.

The fact that rival MTN provides both 3.6 Mbps HSDPA and HSUPA at no additional charge to all its mobile broadband subscribers may have prompted Vodacom to scrap the R 49.00 requirement for HSUPA access.

Recent media reports suggested that both Vodacom and MTN are considering more aggressively priced broadband offerings, but both cellular providers downplayed the reports simply saying that an announcement may be made about pricing in due course.
