I have a colleague who has just asked me this question. My first thoughts is that I believe it is possible, but I am not sure. He recieved an unwanted DSTV decoder and a satellite dish from a family member and wants to do a DIY dish installation. He now wants to know whether he will be able to see the signal strength and signal quality before he activates his subscription?

Yes. The menu option is there and it doesn't have anyhing to do with whether the supscription is activated or not.

Question is, does he have a satellite signal finder? Its a bit of a hit and miss without one

No, he has a good compass, a protractor and the information from the Dishpointer website.

You could just check the direction other dishes in your area are facing, works pretty well.

I found the sattelite signal finder to be cumbersome, its easier to use the DSTV's own signal levels, they work better, just start the dish in the right direction and you are good to go...

It will work. Just remember that there are different frequencies, about 13 of them at the moment IIRC. So if you are getting 100% signal when tuned to MNet, doesn't mean Sky News will be 100% etc.
