I need to purchase new tyres for my car and I am curious as to what to look at when purchasing tyres. Apart from price how would I decide on what is a good tyre to purchase?

I drive a Kia Cerato hatch, riding on 205/55R16's I have phoned around a bit and received the following quotes:

Dunlop SP Sport FM800 - R880
Goodyear Efficientgrip - R920
Conti Premium Contact 2 - R1030
Michelin Primacy 3 R1150
Michelin Pilot Sport 4 R1195

My question is how do I know what makes a better tyre. The Dunlop's were priced the best, but is it a good tyre or is it worthwhile to look at the more premium tyres for longevity, dry/wet grip, noise performance and fuel efficiency (if influenced)? I do not really need a high-performance tyre, but I do drive a lot of long distances so looking to something that will be safe and will last.

I'd go for the contis on that list

the best tyre by far is the Michelin pilot sport 4 , but for a Kia its not worth it.

I would go for Michelin Pilot Sport 4

Others to consider Hankook Ventus Prime 3 K125, Michelin Primacy 4, Dunlop Sp Sport Fast Response, Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance, Continental Premium Contact 5 or 6, Yokahama BluEarth ES32.

You can google search for tyre reviews. There are user reviews and then there are tests reviews done by professionals. There are also tyre EU labels which gives consumer a basic guideline for but not 100% accurate.

Well

I feel that this will be overkill for my car as well, I added it to the list purely because it is just R45 extra from the Primacy 3's.

I will try to look at reviews, I found that most reviews are done by people who actually purchased the tyres for their own cars so the reviews seem to be all over the place ranging from 1 star to 5 stars.

Primacy 3 all the way. If rotated and cared for they will do 60k + km.
I had 2x sets on my previous car, could not fault them.

I have the Dunlop FM800s, really can't complain at all. Great tyres and Dunlop rotate and keep them balanced for the life of the tyre. 20 000km on them so far and still in great nick. Should be good for 50/60 000 km if I had to guess. Really can't see that any tire is worth paying more for.

I've had two sets of Continental's go out of round on me, so wouldn't recommend those

At the moment I am considering the Dunlop FM800's purely from a price perspective, it seems to be quite a newish tyre so there is not much information available on it yet. Otherwise, it will probably be the Michelin Primacy's, they seem to have very good reviews in terms of fuel efficiency and longevity so the extra cost might be worth it in the long run.

Who in the Stellenbosch, Cape Town area would be recommended for fitment and wheel alignment?

Tiger wheel and tyre n1 city.. between the 3 other places I had been previously, they were the only ones who were able to correctly diagnose and fix the alignment issue I had on my car after my rear wheel came off at 80kmh..

I refuse to take my car anywhere else now for tyre related treatment..

I am very impressed with the Goodyear Efficientgrip, wet and dry grip is amazing. Better than my previous conti's

I would go for the Goodyear Efficientgrip as it's only R40 more then the Dunlops.
Dunlops are noisy tyres and will never by them.

I bought Bridgestone tyres from Supaquick and they still good for another 50k km.
