Selecting new tyres

how are you still in the world of the living?
Apparently corsas have very good rear axels and suspension... Or maybe very bad...

Car just dropped onto the axel followed by extremely loud grinding noises until I managed to get the car to a stop with the brakes..

I will try to look at reviews, I found that most reviews are done by people who actually purchased the tyres for their own cars so the reviews seem to be all over the place ranging from 1 star to 5 stars.
I used to do my best to buy tyres scientifically but these days I stroll into Tiger Wheel and Tyre (I trust the local one to sort out issues I have and they let me stand and watch and interfere while they do my wheel alignment), and see what they have in stock. If they have more than one in stock, I pick something other than the cheapest, but avoid Bridgestones and Dunlops because they're noisy. If I haven't had a hassle with the old tyres I'll often just get the same because they won't be terrible.

Even if I screw up and buy rubbish, they'll only be on the car for a year and then I get to choose all over again, so I don't stress too much.

seesh, was it a lugnut that came off? or something worse, sure the damage was quite significant.
Id have imagined the car would have spinned and then flippd over.

I recently purchased Michelin Pilot Sport, they are pretty brilliant. After the "breaking in" phase I went back to the shop the and bought 1 for my spare.

Haven't tested them on the track yet.

So, for whatever reason, on the specific Corsa model I had, they integrated the wheel bearing into the drum brake.. the wheel bearing is held in place in the drum by a circlip.. the drums were replaced, circlip was not seated properly because no aftermarket drums were manufactured correctly at the time and the circlip groove was machined to deep..

Soon as I got up to enough speed, drum, wheel bearing and wheel went bye-bye..

Will be purchasing the pilot sport 4 soon.Just need to roll the fenders first so they fit.

Don't skimp. Get the Michelin. You'll probably have them for a few years... they are worth it.

I received a quote on Bridgestone tyres, I think it was Ecopia's at around R1300.
I wouldn't touch Dunlop as I had uneven wear on my tyres and would not recommend it for a car without abs brakes.
Moved to bridgestone ecopia and they were very good tyres. They come with a free insurance but it's expensive as well, cheaper than buying a new tyre though.
Currently have Goodyear duragrip which is a noisy Tyre compare to the ecopia.

Had the same issue with Dunlops

If you're looking for a good priced place in Cape Town I would recommend All wheel and tyre on Voortrekker, was calling around and they were the best priced for my needs :)

I want to thank everyone who advised on tyres and gave their opinions. I went with the Dunlop FM800's it's a fairly new tyre and I have read some positive things about them.

I would have preferred to go with the Primacy's, but I got a bit of discount on the Dunlops as well and with a saving of R350 per tyre I just could not justify the Primacy's. At the moment they do seem to be a bit more quiet that the previous set, only time and distance will tell how they perform down the line.

I have used Nankang ns2 tyres on my sports car, they were so good, i bought a second set when the first were finished - much better than the bridgestone oem's

Michelin Pilot Sport 4’s all the way, had them on my GTI they are brilliant on breaking and handling.

I have bridgestones on my new car (GTD), they are good but no where near the PS4’s

Have you looked at Pirelli? I was hung up initially between the Pirelli and PS4’s

My conti is also treating me well, but they worn out so quick :(

Most people have the same problem with these sets the 225/40 R18 SSR 5, and they cost a pretty penny to replace :(

Worth it in the end. I've hit a couple pot holes in the rain and they held firm...
