Wondering if anybody knows off a good enough good that does not require a firearm license
Something to do enough damage to deter a potential home invader

Does such a gun exist?

All kinds of options here: https://byrna.co.za/

Kinda worrying when going up against guys with guns armed with anything else … but it’s your personal decision (including tactically in the moment).

I'm just looking for something to cover me from now up until the time I'm licensed. Better something than nothing during this time

Pepper spray (like Saber Red), decent pocket knife and a high lumen flashlight. Panic button with armed response for in the driveway/home as well. Start on a simple medical kit too (tourniquet, gauze, pressure bandages etc). All still useful after the gun arrives.

I wouldn't bother with pepperball/paintball guns that cost thousands (Byrnas start at like R6k on Safari Outdoor's website), you are much better off saving that money for when the firearm arrives and spending it on a holster, ammo, training, etc.
Also wouldn't bother with a crossbow, good luck reloading that in the dark with people shooting back at you after the first bolt.

Byrna is a toy gun
Yes they are rubbish for self defense. A mate of mine fell for the marketing nonsense and then tried to sell it to me. Nice toy though and it does feel good in the hand and well made.

There's a very good chance that you might just make the criminal you're shooting with this toy pissed off enough to actually really want to attack you.

People who believe a pepper type spray is a good thing are idiots.

The chances of incapacitating the perp and not yourself are very small.

That's why you spend a little extra to get the gel spray type instead of the vapour spray types.

Rather spend the money on training (eg. kravmaga) and securing your property.

In SA it is never a singular entity performing appropriation without compensation but always a group.

I have played paintball for 20 years and had the experience of being shot with solids by some gifted individual who "accidentally" mixed a few with his paint.
Other than leaving some nasty bruises it didnt stop me from confiscating said individual's marker and dragging him off the field for the marshals to sort him out.

Dont bring a toy to a gunfight.

All those muzzle flashes won't provide your eyes with ample light for reloading that crossbow?

Using pepper pellets or spray in the home is not a good idea.

A normal paint gun under your bed with the hopper filled with 50 nylon balls would be a better idea imo. The barrage might be enough to turn someone around.

Never bring a knife to a gun fight.

Umarex .50 is probably the hardest hitter but unless you hit the intruder in the middle of his forehead and the pepper goes in his eyes ,make sure you have good running shoes on .

Agree with this, made one small change, the Sabre Red directed gel is really effective when applied correctly.
A bit more difficult to use (you get training versions as well), but works well.

All of this while you get licensed for a decent firearm, and after.

These (tourniquet, gauze, pressure bandages, chest seals etc.) are more for you and your loved ones than others, and need to be at hand when needed else it is useless, and do not forget training in effective use of these, i.e. first aid training, stop the bleed training etc.

All of these items can still be useful when SHTF even if you carry a firearm, including a non lethal option like a good pepper gel.
