Self inflicted wounds/pain

Spoke to a good friend of mine today who's really worried about her daughter (16).

She got very addicted to weed & alcohol and to prevent her from going onto stronger drugs she's been admitted to a place of recovery. The main reason for this however is because she's hurting herself with knives, glass and needles all the time. Needless to say she ran away from home as well.

Has anyone had experience with children inflicting wounds on themselves?
 
I was close to doing so myself, then realised my emotional pain is worse than physical and cutting myself is stupid.

A frienf of mine also self-harms. It is normally cuts on her arms. She is much older though (32) and she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder (not sure if that has anything to do with the cutting).
 
I wonder if it might be a question of looking for attention. Maybe combined with depression - then again I'm no doctor

How bad must things get in order for you to inflict pain on yourself in this way?
 
Masochist-someone who obtains pleasure from receiving punishment.
 
The reason they normally give is that their emotional pain is so bad that they inflict physical pain to either draw their attention away from the emotional pain, or to relieve it.
 
A friend at school used to do that, what is her home life like? Are her parents abusive?

I've visited rehab centres, it's no place for angsty teenagers.

Yes, Blu, they are usually related. In the case of my ex, she was so obsessed by her appearance that she used to chew holes into her cheeks. Used to freak me out no end :(

This is often the default fall-back for people who have no idea what's actually going on (chemically) in the minds of people with depression (including schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder). "Ag, he/she is just looking for attention. Don't worry, they'll get over it!" Don't ever think that.

In what way was she obsessed by her appearance ? Always wanting to look good, or ... ? How did chewing holes into her cheeks then help?

Many women are obsessed with being skinny, so they try get the drawn face look by sucking their cheeks in so their faces look thinner. At least, this is how I understand it.

i think it's more behavioural. self-harm is about self-worth and repression of anxiety. it's a way of feeling something if you're repressed or providing injury and therapy physically if you aren't able to feel emotional relief.
it's done in hidden places so that you can privately deal with the emotions. so inside the mouth would be an obvious place, as your mouth generally heals fast and isn't obvious to others.
it would have the added benefit of causing pain when eating, enabling an eating disorder. often eating disorders, drug abuse and self-mutilation form part of the same coin.
 
@blunomore - I think you're hitting the nail on the head with what you're saying as did some of the other responses hear, @murrybiscuit etc.

From what I know this child doesn't know who her father is, neither does her mom (I believe she does). The mother's been married twice and has been living with another guy (call him J) the past 10 years. I also do not think her mother has a meaningful emotional input in her daughter...although she loves her very much.

That is so sad.

How does a woman not know who the father of her child is? :erm:

I often wonder why some people are blessed with children if that is how they go about doing things.

She's never had a stable parent in her life. I've known her mother for about 15 yrs now - she's a very strong, manipulative woman. I believe she was institutionalised at some stage as well. When you talk to her you always get the feeling she can snap any moment.

However I do believe she wants the best for her children (3 daughters - each with their own father )- just not cut out for motherhood. I feel sorry for her because I honestly believe she never had control over her life
 
Argh there isn't much you can do, unfortunatley - apart from YOU staying FAR away
