hello, how much do you pay when choosing a self installation option from telkom rather than paying the 700 rand?

The Installation from Telkom is just them pulling a cable from their boxes to your place. If every Tom, Harry and 'ImDaMan' had access to do this then the world would be such a sweet place.

Although, you will get the odd Joe that just messes it all up.

You can't install it yourself.

Of course you can.

That has been an option almost from day one, back in 2002.

Buy a modem plus filter, call Telkom to activate the service on the line, and verify it on this page using the Telkom test account details:

http://apps.telkom.co.za/ADSLVERIFY_NEW/verifyRequest.do

If the OP doesn't have a telephone line, then that will of course have to be installed by Telkom first.

In short, to answer the question, there are no fees involved for the installation if you do it yourself, other than the standard monthly rental fees for the telephone and ADSL line.

You do have the option to not have Telkom setup the router for you (if you are capable). From an old step by step article:

"
Here are the various costs incurred from Telkom. All costs include VAT:

Residential line installation (exchange connection): R551.69
Residential line rental (exchange connection): R148.37 per month
Telkom ADSL rental 1Mbps: R165.00 per month
Telkom ADSL rental 2Mbps: R299.00 per month
ADSL installation: R705.20
The R705.20 installation charge for ADSL is not charged if you choose the self-installation option.
"

Not sure but prices might have changed with regards to the line install charges. But it should be about R500 and you will save on the R700 ADSL installation just for them to switch your router on and plug the DSL cable in. (Not that complicated)

Lol for some of the replies, the thing is I got a telephone line installed already and now want to get adsl activated on the line, I'm just seeing where I can save some rands if possible

Your in the same position as i was. You cannot do this yourself a technician still needs to come out and alocate a port and hook it up.

When did you activate your ADSL? I did mine in the last 2 years on a existing line. I just plugged the modem in. Activated my "Faster" package on the phone and configured it according to the steps in sms I received.

I recon you misread that.

If he has the line, he can proceed with the self install, Telkom will let you know once the port is activated and then get a modem and activate as mentioned above.

Dudes I have been through this exercise today and last year. In both cases I have a fully working landline in the flat. A Technician still gets dispatched to test the line and activate it in the box.

Ah maybe it's changed or that it's been installed in a flat maybe?

It's flats both occasions, I assume then standalone is different?
Possible. Surely flats have a more complicated setup. My line comes direct from the pole at the back of my house and back neighbours.

It's the same for suburban homes. Someone I know recently had ADSL installed on their existing landline and the R700 was compulsory. This was end Nov 2016. You're no longer given the self-installation option.

That's what I was told, that the R700 applies regardless.
