self install cost

Listen to Thor187.
My friend actually had their agents on the phone. They told him he had to pay R700. He visited a Telkom shop and they said the same thing. You will definitely pay that money.

ADSL line was activated less than 2 weeks ago. Self install is still there as an option. Did not have to pay R700

I remember the same thing when I self installed. The website said one thing, the call center said another and the shops said yet another.

I initially took the install option because I thought it was this complicated thing and that a new line had to be physically installed or something. Then I searched the forum for how it's done because they said it could take a technician 2 weeks to come, I had it up and running by the next day.

How?

Where did you get access to the telkom boxes how did you allocate the ports how did you authenticate the line on their end?

Are you sure you installed it. Sounds to me you merely transfered ownership.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Telkom will set you up at the exchange you're not paying R700 for that. You're paying R700 for someone to put the filter, plug in your modem and setup your username and password.

I did not have to do anything physically to my existing line, I literally just plugged in the modem, connected the phone line with that splitter thing.

Then went to this site http://apps.telkom.co.za/ADSLVERIFY_NEW/verifyRequest.do to verify my ADSL line. I can't remember the exact procedure but I do remember I had to put in a temporary login and change some settings until I received a SMS then I had to phone in to get my new username.

Nope I did that. I paid 746 for him to connect me to the place.

The line was already in my place.

Exactly this.

If I remember correctly the temporary login for the modem was username: guest1@telkomadsl and password: guest1

I think it was guest@telkomadsl and the password was guest

But those details came preloaded on the modem from Telkom, they would SMS you your actual username and password and then give you instructions on how to change the password.

I bought my own modem. I think it was to enable you to go to the Telkom site to activate the ADSL if you did not have alternative internet access.

Lol for some of the replies, the thing is I got a telephone line installed already and now want to get adsl activated on the line, I'm just seeing where I can save some rands if possible

When I moved from Dial-up to ADSL a number of years ago, I did the "Self install" option. You plug in your router, switch it on and if you are getting a free router, then all the instructions should be in the box on how to set it up. It takes like 5 min or so to do.

If you are using your own router, then your ISP (if it's not Telkom) will give you the router settings.

Edit: no cost for self installation
