Self Install Manual from Telkom

lol, Telkom is getting even more lazy, same installation fee, but it seems you are paying them to do it yourself

I was under the impression that you don't pay the installation fee if you chose the self install option...

I was told you don't. I'll let you know in "11 working days" when they get my line installed

Does anyone know why the self-install option is not available in KZN yet? I don't see why it can't be if all I need is the pdf document (no bundle!).

Lady at Telkom shop didn't know why - said she will try to find out and then call me....yeah right!

Only areas of provinces have the Self-Install Option!

Is your area compatible with ADSL? - if it is availabe - it shouldnt be a problem for Self-Install Option

For 0800 237 500 and enquire about if its compatible or not?

Photonman - Yes, it is compatible and they have given me an installation date. But I would still prefer to save the R404 and install it myself.

Makes no sense to me...

Self-Install is very straight forward! they configure the DSLAM on the exchange, u then plug ur router into the line, the adsl light stops flashing and connects..u then do the setup i stated earlier..u then go the the www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl site, u then register and within like 30min u all done!

its as easy as pie:p

Yeah - I know it's easy...which is why I don't get why any area can make use of the self-install. Especially somewhere like Durbs!

Telkom logic I guess - don't even try to understand it!

What I can't understand is that they charge R158 for a guy to come out and PHYSICALLY wire a phone line into the exchange, but have the kahunas to charge R404 for fiddling a few switches?!?

This is the rubbish story I got when I called about self-install - Durban is not a high demand ADSL area, so there is not that much of a backlog. Self-install was initiated to reduce the backlog in other areas. Also, in those areas with self-install, Telbomb have "backup technicians" contracted if the customer needs help. I told him I won't need any help - just let me do it!!
