So Telkom wants R700 bucks for installing an voice & ADSL line. Since I'm a new customer, they say self-install isn't an option.

The thing is there is a physical line installed at the townhouse. The previous lessee had ADSL. It seems that has been disconnected though (i.e. physically connected, but not linked to a valid account).

Is there a way around this? I can probably get the previous phone # that was used by the previous lessee - would that enable Telkom to work around this?

Thanks

yep apply for adsl line though a isp, then will just activate the adsl without a fee.

after you do have the analog line up and running.

You can always just order a Closer Package Option 1, 2, 3. Then the "installation" is free. After the line is fully installed and the order complete then you order DSL and ask for hte self-installation option. And when you have been given a date for the installation for DSL make sure it's a self-installation by calling the Service Activations dept. and acquire if it's a self-install option if it's not make the agent call the technician assigned to the order and let he/she tell the technician it's a self-install option (I had to do it). So double check everything.

I hope that helps

hmm...it seems the person at the call centre was giving me bad info.

The R700 seems to be a deposit due to credit history (I have pretty much no history).

Installation is R705.20, so unless they rounded down thats something different.

Gonna drive to the Telkom shop & hear what their story is.

It seems that *officially* Closer does not include installation:
Free Closer activation (charges may occur for line or DSL installation) No contract obligations on CLOSER.

Same happened to my flatmate and I. Just took the closer package for like R15 more per month so we didn't have to pay the R700
