From the latest chat I had today, a Telkom sales lady called, and wanted to give me DSL info, so I asked about the new self-install option.

the good part, is that it will cut out the R404 installation fee.

As can be expected from telkom, theres a problem with it, they ONLY PERMIT it ON 1024k lines.

when asked what the difference in intallation procedures is (which is obvious), she said none.

So y only 1024K, because thats the policy that has been set!

Another moment of telkom selection process of whos entitled to benefits!

Simple, most people dont get 1024K so by only allowing self install on 1024K they still get to rip most of the people.

Telkom can suck my big hairy toe.

I reckon it's the sales ape trying to push her luck. A lot of us have done Self install, I did it on a 192 line.

Or simply a know nothing Telkom orc? This is the norm at Telkom right? The client knows more than the support staff?

[EDIT] BTW what does the self install actually require you to do?

Plz man im on 192 and did the self install, phone her back and then tell her about me, if you want let her phone me, il give u my no on pm if she wants to phone me to ask me if i have 192 and did the self install. Cos i did and its working.
I will even give her the ref no.
Stupid telkom retards.
Only on 1024, bleh.
mine was done on the 14th of Sep so it was not so long ago and i live in Cape Town.

What's involved in doing a self install justinct?

I agree with justinct. My self-install is just about up and running and I have a 192 line. Just beware about the time it will take you to get it installed. I applied 3 weeks ago and finally got them to forward it to the guys who need to switch my analog line to the digital ADSL line. I was calling them about once a day for the last three weeks. Finally on Tuesday they called me to make an arrangement for the installation. After mentioning that I applied for self-install, the guy sounded surprized and said he will ask the people form self-install to call me.

To make a ling story short, I received 3 calls on Tuesday from 3 different people within Telkom that all wanted to arrange the installation, did not know I was taking self-install and wanted to know whether I wanted a modem. I am taking the contract and already got the modem, so if I was not an honest guy, I could have had another one for free. I passed these problems on to a friend in Telkom and he is in contact with the ADSL account manager. It seems like there is a admin nightime running on the inside of Telkom's ADSL department. I will give feedback on the progress...

Little off topic here, but I cant believe there's still people taking out the contract with Telkom. If this helps only one guy out there it's worth the off topic: DONT take out the contract. READ the 'ADSL newbie faq' thread (a sticky at the top)

.geek, when i did my self install, i made a thread called "do it yourself"

All the info you probably need is in there, if you cant find it then pop me a pm and il try answer all your q's as best i can

Cheers

I know that, but I gave it some thought myself. The issue is that I do not have a couple of hundred lying around for the ADSL router. Telkom will not allow themselves to be outpriced and they will therefore simply reduce their own prices as competition increases. The changes that the SNO will be hosting residential DSL offers within the next two years are very slim. With this in mind, I took the contract and got a R1200 router for free. I do not use them as ISP, so I only use Telkom for what everyone else is using them - the line rental - and it is this item that is the key. I also pay R270 like everyone else, but I got the modem for free. I got it officially that, when they drop their ADSL costs, the contract fees also drop. From this angle I regarded it as really not bad an option, but you are welcome to differ from we.

What i would have suggested is that you buy the billion 5102 router for R600, half the price of the router telkom provides and i bet its either just as good or better than that one, and it has adsl2+ option and then you wouldnt need to sign the contract...

But neway life goes on.

Did a search, cant find "do it yourself" :(

I applied for my DSL line towards the end of June. After a lot of calls to Telkom, installation was authorised by the middle of August. I waited two weeks for an installation date (I have been told that a 48 hour wait is normal). The installation date given to me was the 26th September - almost a month after being given a date. 26th September came and went and the technician simply didn't pitch. After calling Telkom since then, they assure me they are investigating why he didn't show. They still can't give me a reason.

I have now been told that they are waiting for the scheduling department to give me a new installation date, no doubt this will take two weeks with a further one month wait.

Is this normal? I have tried to contact a manager but the phone is either engaged or just rings, is there anyone who can give me some advice on what I could do?

I also enquired about self-install but they tell me the order has to be cancelled and started from scratch to do it with self-install.

Sigh.

LOL - have to cancel the order and start from scratch. LOL LOL.
Just place the new order for a self install.
If they say that you can do it, and your exchange supports it, then you cancel the other order.
If the other order comes through first, cancel the self install order.
:p

Ok, where do you live?
If u live in Ct i might be able to help you, depending on where in Ct.

What i would suggest isn use all your contacts to try get hold of a techie, get his number.

Once you have his number, explain to him what your story is and you just need him to sort you out at the exchange and at your home. (Line testing etc )

Tell him you will give him a case of beer or a bottle of wine, i promise he will be there within a day or two, if not within the hour.

Cheers

p.s dnt bother trying to get a techies no thru telkom.

Well it's now no longer a technical problem, I have to wait on the scheduling department. Every single call I make, the most common response is "We have escalated your problem." Throughout the last few months, only one Telkom employee has ever contacted me. Each time I recieved an update, such as installation date, authorisation being given etc., it has been me making the call. If not, I'm sure I would still be waiting for port allocation! I have had a response from a manager this afternoon who assures me the problem will be sorted out soon. As for switching to self-install, I was informed this would result in a further 20 or so days (for what I don't know, sounds similar to what Justinct was told..) but I will just wait and see what happens. I'm in Hillcrest, Durban btw.

Cool, thanx Telkom, another piece of miss-information to hit you with. You are either (1) Discriminating against other ADSL users by refusing the other line types the self-install option, or (2) you are publicly lying again to a client. Both are unacceptable buisness practices.

As far as I know, self install was/is a trial thing, no?
Maybe its not trial no more and only applies to 1024 lines?
