hi!

i'd like to know if the ADSL self install option is available by now? can u actually call telkom and tell them that you want to self install and avoid the R404 installation costs? :D

no, they have to do it since its their network

so there is no possible way to avoid the R404 installation?

Yes just ask for self install - you don't pay the R404. They send you a link to activate your account. Of course they don't tell you this...

ahhh! i dont want a contract.... oh well will have to phone them and find out :( hopefully it'll be good news but i doubt it

Hold it, the last I heard is that "self-installation" is only available if you take a 24month contract with TelkoDemonopoly, and accept whatever cruddy ADSL modem they throw at you, which allegedly has to be a modem they supply so 'TelkoDemonopoly can assist you with the self installation', otherwise you still get charged the R404 ripoff fee...

No this is not the case. I recently did a self installation for myself & got a Netgear 834GT Router. When Telkom called me to say that the ports had been allocated, all I did was insist on installing myself. I was then told to go to my nearest Telkom retail outlet to get the self installation letter which tells you haow to do everything.

i second that. spoke to telkom directly and yes you can get the self installation kit.

Sigh just wish i could have found out before i got my adsl installed.

cool thx everyone :) now i can avoid the R404 atleast :P

I went into the telkom office today and ordered the do it yourself kit.
What happens is they now do the line testing thing and when that is done they phone you and tell you where to go and collect ur "kit"
Then you go home and install it and phone ur isp and telkom as far as i know to get the link etc and to activate ur acc with the isp.
This way is much better and you dont pay the installation cost nor do you wait for fifty years before your dsl is installed.
Will try keep you guys posted on what happens with this story so if there are catches etc you will know about it.
THey said they would phone me 2mo...so lets see.

I'm guessing a couple of POTS filters, and probably an A4 photostat with the instructions "Plug da dingus ina fone socket wif da fone on da one saade anna plug hole ona udda. Do it ova n ova jis not ona fast speed dingus"

i don't think they'll supply the filters for free. they come with the router when you get their modem after all.

don't worry ic ;)

You don't need instructions ic, installation is a real no brainer. I did it without even taking the self install option (There wasn't one)

you just put a filter on each non-ADSL phone socket in the house. In other words, your handsets, fax machines etc need to go through a filter.

Thats pretty much it.

Plug in your modem/router, put in your account details and you're done.

The Self install option is currently available in most parts of c.t and in most parts of jhb! Make sure to ask for it otherwise you wont get it!

Heh heh, that's exactly what happened to me, at much the same time. I phoned in the beginning of August (~06/08) to check on my status and try put some pressure to move up the date from the end of the month (29/08). Same thing - DSLAMs and line were go, just waiting for a technician to come out. So self installation it was, thank you very much, an extra 3 weeks of broadband bliss :)
