Ok, let me clarify my situation, I applied for HomeDSL192 back in June, and being the sly dude that I am, I specifically asked them to make a note on the order that I wanted the self-install option, and I then set the installation date for 2005-08-05 bcos my TelkoDemonopoly tax invoice is issued on the 4th of every month [i.e. one day before the installation date], and on the 5th of August I got a call from a techie coming to do the line quality test [which in theory was actually done in June or July bcos 0800375375 said it had been done], so I have been using HomeDSL192 since 5th August with my own ADSL router [attached to my SmoothWall box that used to run iBurst]...

But at no time was I told about a self-install 'kit', and my confusion is - what does this 'kit' actually include if you buy your own router/modem and you use a 3rd-party-ISP account...the only thing I can imagine is microfilters...

I am also confused, what does the kit contain? POTS filters and microfilters?

If it's only filters, it's shocking. Telkom thus, charge you R404 installation for a DSL Line, to install filters for your telephone (a telephone you may not even have and/or use), AND you have to purchase your own filters for them to install?????????????????

Wundaba!

thats why i want to know, if this is the case.. then its OMG WTF...

I have started a thread on the "do it yourself" way.
I went to telkom on monday and ordered everything etc.
I am logging everything i do and when i do it and updating the thread.
So for those who want to know what happens and how it happens and what the "kit" contains (i also dont know) i will tell all as soon as i know.

Enjoy

I did the self install

I was approached by Telkom 6 days ago and offered the self-install option. Being an IT professional I jumped at the chance and had everything installed within 90 minutes after being offered the option. (This includes the time needed to drive to Telkom and to get the modem and instructions)

However, I soon realised that the ADSL connection has never been activated by Telkom and it took me five days before I could get Telkom to admit that. Now I am still waiting....

During that five days it was clear that Telkom's helpline and Telkom itself is not ready for the self-install option. So, if you do go that route, all I can say is good luck!!

Self Install - Finally !!

I lost my temper this morning with the bad service I received from Telkom and phoned the CEO's office.

Within 45 minutes a Telkom techie called back, apologized for the fact that they forgot to activate my DSL and promised to drive out to the exchange immediately to rectify the problem. 30 minutes later he called me back saying that the line is connected and my modem synced immediately.

I am now on line using the USB modem Telkom supplied and everything is working perfectly.

It helps to phone the CEO...

How about posting his number? :D

Anyway, I think this Self Install option is a REALLY positive step from Telkom. Since there are still technical requirements in enabling a line for ADSL at the exchange, it seems Telkom is willing to overlook this minor expense, which is something I certainly never expected of them. I would have thought they would charge you like R100 for the Self Install, to cover the kit and the exchange work.

There have been knee-jerk negative responses to this move by some people already, and I just can't understand that. Telkom has always maintained that their service relies on economies of scale, and Self Install will certainly speed up ADSL uptake and satisfy their own conditions for price alleviation.

I think if we are to be taken seriously as a community, we should give praise where praise is due, and criticise when criticism is due. We can't always be seen as a bunch who mindlessly criticise the whole time.

So with that in mind, to Telkom I say: "Well done and thank you. And keep it coming please".

PS: I know people will have some issues with getting through to the call centers and getting kits etc. Bear in mind that this service has just launched, and since we are in Africa after all, some initial teething problems are to be expected.

Telkom CEO

Just call 012 3113911 and ask for the CEO's office. If the switchboard lady gives you lip just be firm and assertive... :D
