On a related track... I bought an external HD enclosure at the Spar in Bel Air mall, 2 weeks ago. It doubles as a media player. It plays DivX, MPEG 1-2, MP3, VOB files, and all kinds of media, except ogg vorbis. It also can drive a VGA monitor or a TV.

I have one. Streams wirelessly or through ethernet. Has optical out. The 510 has HDMI. So only two cables(power and hdmi) are needed if streaming wirelessly.

Plays every xvid I have ever downloaded. Does the picture and mp3 streaming as well.

So my xbox is for games( as I don't see divx being supported on xbox anytime soon) and the media player for watching all my downloaded content.

Also have a dvd/divx player but since the media player, don't use it that often...

How reliable are these?

I bought a similar system about 3 years back and it quite buggy, slow and unreliable. It had all the connections and I really love the system - but the freezing/errors were slightly annoying :/

I actually used the system 90% for my music collection. So, I bought one of these a few days ago for music http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/wireless_music_systems/devices/881&cl=za,en

Awesome machine for music :P

You can't beat MviX for reliability and software stability. But they are not cheap. I love my MviX 5000U unit with a 500Gb drive. My kids love it too :D

I hardly every use the DVD recorder or event he DVD player anymore. Pretty much play everything through the MviX.
 
It was a cheapie. It's a DANY... I bought it to replace my external HDD which the stole when they broke into my house earlier this year.

It has so far given me no hassles, and I bought it with the intention of "reworking" the firmware ;)

Paid R900 for it. It does both ATA or SATA. The SATA is slow, so I removed the adaptor board and got a speed increase :)

As for the Mvix... I know who imports those personally. They offered me a job last year which I turned down
 
MVix Box is finally here in South Africa

My brother & I each bought the lastest Mvix 780 HD with 1TB HDD units three months ago and they great , then we saw the MVixBox on demo @Rage , when i came to Gauteng 2 vist my follks. The dude at the Mvix stand told me that they would be only availible by the 22nd October and the price would be R2999 excl vat but I just got an email from Esquire who is releasing them on Friday 17th October @R2199.00 in Midrand , pity I would have love to get hold of one of puppies to play with this weekend.

My LG plays all these file types. Just no usb :(
Tho my bro picked up a Wharfdale with all the above, usb & SD for about R600 at hi-fi corp about 6 months ago
