Go for it :)

The story for those interested: I'm a salesman at Incredible Connection and seeing as some money has FINALLY come my way and I like to spend money :D I thought why not get an Xbox. Last console I had was a PS2, oh and a WII for stuffing around. I'm more of a computer gamer so this is new territory.

The only thing I'm worried about is the hardware. Excuse my ignorance from now on. Seeing as the console (360) is a couple of years old, what is the current models specs like compared to a PC with decent specs? Don't want to invest in this thing only to be taken out 2 months later my a mid range laptop etc.

So anyway, my colleagues are trying to sell this thing to me, and now I'm thinking of going for it. Suggestions?

Oh yes, and is it worth waiting for any next gen consoles? Don't even know if there are any on the horizon, so out of the loop. Don't say 3DS, thats a piece of junk :p

Sure why not? The Xbox is fine apart from the fact that only a few available new AAA exclusive games with not to much coming in 2011, but you have all the older games to catch up with that can be acquired cheaply. The PS3, now in it's prime, have a lot of AAA exclusive games in 2011 but the PSN online network was of for 5 days now due to hackers and the WII is gone and dusted with a new Wii HD due next year. The PS3 and Xbox replacements will only be expected as late as 2014 they speculate. Thus the Xbox elite with all the bells and whistles is a good buy for now and you can later upgrade to the Kinect "controller" or maybe invest in the Kinect bundle straight away for that matter.
 
what type of games do you enjoy? ps3 has good exclusives but multi platforms are usually better on xbox, it also has a superior online experience and a large back catalogue of awesome games, go for it.
 
I'm an FPS person actually. But racing is a very close 2nd. Sport in general, and the reason im looking at console is they stopped making the Tiger Woods PGA Tour for PC. And I'm dead keen to get the Masters one.
 
awesome console, really is but I would get one second hand, you often find bargains bundled with games, there was one on the classifieds here not to long ago, I almost bought it to have a second one.

if buying new, yeh it is old and would wait to see what wii2 will do the market - it will either force a price drop on the older consoles or it will be a better choice

You played any fps on console before?
Noticed you were a pc gamer and all I use my xbox for is racing and sports games. Consoles suck for fps.
yes yes I know people will say you get used to it but its still not as nice to play on as a pc is.

Agreed. Never liked FPS on console, but never really cared much about it. Love the controller for racing games tho.

:D fps? xbox = fps!

the controller is practically tailor made to fire a virtual gun, puts the dualshock to shame tbh.

Obviously you never played Killzone? I love it, but thats on the PS3 :). Sorry to hear that on the Xbox its sucks as I heard so much about Hallo? PC may be best but unfortunately reading about all the cheaters and hackers I will stick with the PS3 for now.

Yeah Killzone was awesome. Maybe a PS3 is a better option?

When I refer to the Elite it means the top or best model, not the cheap arcade versions, thats my opinion tho, there are members here that would differ. Here are Xbox guys that can help you with the best choice but if it was me and the money is available I would go for the Kinect bundle for sure, again my opinion only. That again will still only be my second choice.

Not in everyones opinion. Without the Kinect no doubt but with the Kinect and Microsoft commitments you never know. I would wait a few months to see what E3 will bring but if the need is now and the money available then a PS3 with move or a Xbox with kinect is the bundles to get! Again Just my opinion.

For car racing there are also the GT5 on PS3 and Forza on Xbox. Again a matter of opinion on which is really the best. I know but could be wrong depending from which side of the fence you look :)

You have to look at all the pro's of both systems and the games that are available and equate them with your likes and needs. PS3 games tend to be more expensive due to the BluRay discs.

Your opinions dont help :p Money is available, need not so much. Problem is, I cant save this money. If I do manage to wait until E3, it will be a miracle!

What is the budget? That will be the first determining factor of what to go for. You asked for Xbox so there is the place to start.

Well considering what I can get from IC (250GB Console + 5 Games, for R3100), thats probably where I'll get it. But I don't want the bundle cause I dont want those games. So trying to find just the console for cheaper. I have someone overseas who could buy it for me, would that be a viable option in terms of warranty etc?

From Sony INT Yes from local "Sony agency" I do not know. Depending on price difference ... is it worth the risk? If you are looking for just the console not bundles then that R3000,00 ballpark is what you can get, on promotion even lower. Just remember that separately the Move controller +game and Kinect +game will cost a helluva lot more on top of that ballpark figure.
 
Dion Wired have an amazing XBox bundle at the moment, for R4k, the 250gb console, 2 games (Fable III & something else) and the Guitar Hero / Rock band with guitar & drum set. Given the 2 bundled games are worth ~R1.4k, you're getting the console at below retail at that price, and they're essentially giving you the guitar hero / rock band set for free.....
