I have an old nokia handset I want to sell to somebody at work, its no longer being used and is not tied into any contract or sim, can I just go ahead and sell it? or must I notify somebody first? is there any official change of wonership papers that need to be filled in? The phone used to be used on Vodacom pay as you go.

For your own peace of mind do a simple bill of sale.

It should contain:

Make & Model

IMEI (use *#06# to get this)

Date and Time of Transaction

Price Paid.

Signed by both parties and both parties ID numbers shown.

Seems over the top, but if your purchaser then goes off and uses your old handset for some illegal activity... You're in the clear!!

Actually the RICA Act does stipulate that your do this. It also says you should inform "the network" but doesn't go on to say if this should be your original network or that of the new owner! But a a bill of sale even just scribbled on some paper gives both you and your buyer some protection.
